To start, I completely agree with you Jess, more games based on literature would be incredible. But in this case, I don’t think the use of a literary source totally surmises the excellence that is Lies of P. As an adjunct, I’m not a From Software die-hard. I adore Sekiro, but the dark souls franchise has entirely passed me by. With Lies of P however, their interpretation of the “Souls” genre has been both meticulous & outstanding; both in it’s storytelling & quality of life improvements. As someone who lacks a history with the literature, the Pinocchio allusions miss me, however, as someone who is familiar with the souls genre, the gameplay/user experience does resonate. The simplicity of leveling, the grinder mechanic, & level design being a few examples. Moreover, in Bloodborne, nothing is doper than that moment of igniting a bolt/fire paper, and watching your weapon become engulfed in a blur of flames or lightning. Lies of P understands that, and allows you to enjoy that feeling without the detrimental affect of a consumable. I.e the grindstone mechanic. Little details like this are what make Lies of P phenomenal to me. It’s not out to be a carbon copy of its progenitor, but rather seeks to improve on a genre that the developers truly love & undoubtedly garner a deep understanding of. I’m closing, the creative vision & ingenuity that Neowiz and Round8 Studio have injected into this game, has been nothing short of miraculous. For a game that was written off as Bloodborne-Pinnochio with Timothée Chalamet, It deserves the utmost credit in the experience that it delivers, despite the tumultuous odds were stacked against it. P.S. for anyone who comes across this, the Wo Long crossover DLC launched recently, and the weapon you receive is incredibly dope.
