They met at a party in their mid twenties. Kelly had actually been invited, and Gray had shown up because he heard there would be free beer. Gray first spotted Kelly while she was doing a keg stand. Something about the smile on her face when she finally tapped out and was back on her own two feet, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, did it for him.

Separately, both had been heavy social drinkers, both known in their respective circles for being able to drink anyone else under the table. Once they got together, it was like the party never stopped. They both worked odd jobs, neither of them getting paid nearly enough, but somehow there was always enough cash for a case of beer, often paired with fast food Gray brought home from wherever he was working at the time.

It was no surprise when they both started getting chubby. The two of them were together so much they barely even noticed, and it was a slow, steady creep that was easy to miss. Until it wasn’t. It took Gray’s belly starting to round out so much that his shirts wouldn’t stop riding up past his bellybutton for Kelly to really register it. They were lying on the couch together, and she looked down and saw that close to an inch of Gray’s lower belly was exposed. That made her take a look at herself. Her own shirt was right on the verge of the same problem, and tight as a second skin. They’d both just polished off a large pizza together, and had finished somewhere in the neighborhood of nine beers between them that evening.

“You ever think about maybe cutting back?” Kelly ventured, eyes locked on the soft hang of Gray’s belly. She said this even though she didn’t really have a problem with either of their weights. Gray had always been a little soft around the middle, and she liked that about him.

“Cutting back on what?” he said, before letting out a loud belch.

Kelly wasn’t sure how to phrase it. The thought had only just crossed her mind for the first time. “On the booze and food, I guess? I dunno.”

Gray had kissed the top of her head then. “I can hear the gears turning in your head telling you to worry. You don’t have to do that.” He grabbed another beer from the side of the couch and handed it to her. “Just relax. Neither of us has to work until tomorrow.

Kelly took the beer and put it out of her mind. Maybe everything was fine?

It took longer for Gray to notice how fat they were getting. They were both on the other side of thirty now, with metabolisms that only seemed to get slower by the year. Everything seemed to stick a little more, and it felt like every fun thing had actual consequences now.

Gray woke up in bed alone after a night out. They’d partied hard, and Gray actually didn’t remember a good part of the night. He felt like shit – thirsty and sluggish, with a vicious headache. Kelly was already up and showering since she had work in the afternoon. She walked out of the bathroom and for the first time in a long time, he took a moment to really look at the woman he loved. When they met, she was a sturdy girl. Not skinny by any means, but there’d been some tone to her arms and her stomach had been pretty flat.

That morning, she didn’t look much like that at all. She jiggled all over as she dried herself off. The big, round belly at her center dominated her figure. Her thighs had gotten pretty chunky, too. Gray was shocked that he’d never noticed how big she’d started to get. To him, Kelly was just Kelly.

After realizing what their lifestyle was doing to his girlfriend, he took a closer look at himself after he showered later that day. He realized he’d gone from a slightly plush teddy bear of a man to undeniably fat. Like Kelly, his weight was mostly centered in his stomach, though his was more rounded and almost hard to the touch, where Kelly was more squishy. How had that happened? He thought back to all the late nights when they stuffed their faces with dollar menu goodies and pizzas that otherwise would’ve been thrown out, a steady flow of beer heading straight down their gullets.

He didn’t know how to talk about it. He didn’t even know if he could really do anything to stop it. He’d been on his own since he was fifteen, and he hadn’t even figured he’d make it past twenty-five. Kelly was in pretty much the same boat. They’d weathered a lot on their own and together. Shit jobs and shit relationships and unstable housing. The only constants they’d both had were each other, and the knowledge that there was always a party to go to where there’d be free beer and good company.

Gray came to the conclusion that it didn’t really matter if he’d gotten fat. Kelly hadn’t paid it any mind, and she was as into him as she’d been the night they met. He couldn’t say he minded Kelly getting chunky, either.

The next time they were in bed together, he took the time to really take Kelly in. Kelly giggled as he left kisses across her pudgy belly and thighs, big hands squeezing every part of her he could reach. He even decided to put his fat belly to good use, using it to spread her thighs and lower lips and grinding against her. She was surprised, but not displeased, wrapping her legs around his waist and pulling him even closer.

After that, neither of them thought too hard about their habits. After all, it wasn’t all bad. Maybe something would make them reconsider one day, but for now, they were both content to be fat, happy, and full of beer.
