Gym leaders actually are required to go easy on their challengers to some extent (it varies depending on how much experience the challenger has of course). They also aren’t the number one trainers though. There’s a hierarchy of sorts in the Pokémon world. For example, to compare it with Naruto terminology. Any ordinary trainer=Genin. League Winners=Chunin. Gym Leaders=Jonin. Elite Four=Sanin. Champion=Kage So, the Champions are the ones who hold the Number One position in any given region. And to become a Champion, one has to go through the gym leaders, win a league, then battle the Elite Four, and then finally defeat the current Champion. You also have to battle the Elite Four and Champion in succession (no breaks). So, basically, how much skill does it take to become number one? A lot XD. You won’t meet the first Champion until about Season 5, I think.

Oh, also. I recommend to watch episodes 111 and 112 together, since it’s a two-parter.
