The guy who teaches Homer how to be a Santa:

is also the guy who hypnotises the power plant softball team into being good players in the season 3 episode "Homer At The Bat".

I know you're thinking "But David, you handsome man and talented writer! Those skillsets share no overlap whatsoever!" and you're absolutely right! But I cannot imagine either career can sustain a full time income on its own, so it makes absolute sense that this poor man would have to take two jobs. No wonder he has such a grumpy general demeanour.

Perhaps he studied in the performing arts, hoping to take a full act on the road, but on finding how difficult it is to break in showbiz, he took to more local pursuits. Most of the year he uses his failed hypnotism act on gullible rich businessmen, and in December he passes on his immense acting talent to help the kids believe in magic.

He's doing a good job. A goooood job.
