Super good vid-- it's interesting how, as a product of the longer runtime, you arrange your argument here in a way that feels structurally pretty distinct compared to your shorter videos. Going through several seemingly disparate examples to illustrate JP’s weird position, and using this sort of russian doll anatomy to your various sub-topics (where you’re tackling arguments inside of other arguments), definitely makes the whole thing feel fairly dense and intricate. It’s different to your shorter videos on these kinds of topics, which feel like they have a more linear, intuitive narrative flow. But not in a bad way. It’s v satisfying to see everything get unpacked and eventually tied back together into a cohesive thesis!!

Nurturing Compassion

I’m only like a minute in and needed to pause because I genuinely couldn’t get past how someone could claim that woman isn’t beautiful? 👀

Great video! I’m a big fan of longer form essays, even if it means more wait time. One thing I’ve always loved about your vids is the humor. You clearly have a lot of fun doing this and it’s infectious. Laughed out loud at the bonus vid plug. I will enjoy my duly earned sewage, thank you.

I've been struck by the apparent lack of interest in psychology shown by Jordan Peterson. He seems to want to believe in a simple, straightforward "real world" that he sees clearly and wants to defend against the idiots and liars who can't see it or won't admit to seeing it. Like, "mind," Jordan? This thing called mind? You've heard of it, right? That's your mind you're describing.

It's interesting how he frames some things in a 'positive' way while the implications of why he says are gross. He says IQ is affected by ethnicity by claiming one group has higher IQ. Of course the implication then would be that other groups have lower IQ. Then, when he advocates for stricter admittance into school to better their programs or whatever, he is implying that some races should just be more excluded from higher education.

From Nature dot com: "According to Jessica Tracy, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, researchers who conclude that Ekman’s theory of universality is wrong on the basis of a handful of counterexamples are overstating their case. One population or culture with a slightly different idea of what makes an angry face doesn’t demolish the whole theory, she says. Most people recognize an angry face when they see it, she adds, citing an analysis of nearly 100 studies9. “Tons of other evidence suggests that most people in most cultures all over the world do see this expression is universal.” Tracy and three other psychologists argue10 that (Lisa Feldman) Barrett’s literature review caricatures their position as a rigid one-to-one mapping between six emotions and their facial movements. “I don’t know any researcher in the field of emotion science who thinks this is the case,” says Disa Sauter at the University of Amsterdam, a co-author of the reply.

@Nelson Denbigh that makes Peterson's seeming defense of the "caricature" position all the more unaccountable--until Joel accounts for it :0
