I feel a bit guilty! The new big video is gonna come out soon, and so many of the points are so similar to the podcast that I worry you guys will feel ripped off. Like I'm pulling from the same notes on both projects lol. Still, it was a really wonderful drafting experience for me, and I wonder if you guys will have enjoyed seeing the sausage get made lol. I really loved making these podcasts, and I'm excited to return to normal bonus content. Thanks for being here throughout!!!

The video is gonna be great cause it's gonna collect all these thoughts together in a comprehensive way. I think it's been cool to essentially see your notes. Can't wait to see the thoughts more developed.

Lynx Yolurkrovich

Personally, I saw this lil series as more of seeing you collect your thoughts along the way. We get more on the spot commentary, while the video itself will be (I hope) with more thought and conciseness behind these ideas you already formed. It was a fun time though.

bigjoel

also, if I do something like this again, I'll probably do it in addition to my bonus videos. Because it was such a help tbh

Downpour

The writing is as troubled this episode as the rest of the Netflix show. But, I do like the visual design of this episode a lot.

Xavier Marican

I will say my dad being my dad has not stopped me from being proud that he’s my dad. Like when he does good stuff and such Edit: seems like I was the only one not confused by this. This means I’m either way smarter than you or I’m as dumb as the show is.

Chris McQueen

If you’re looking for a show to hate watch now that you finished this, I recommend Warcraft

bigjoel

the "would have" is the confusing bit to me. Iroh was his father, so no "would" applies here. just a bit of awkward writing imo

Xavier Marican

Well he’s dead, so the “would” is “if he were alive, he would have been proud”.

bigjoel

that's a fair point, I am struggling to articulate why this line sounds so strange to me. Like, it's in the past tense, right? "I would have been happy to have eaten that pie" says that there's a point in the past where I'd have liked the pie and didn't have it, right? I think "Lu Ten would be proud to see you now" or something like that is a way more reasonable way of writing this sentiment

bigjoel

or "Lu Ten would have loved to see you now" would also make sense. The "would" in this context seems to refer to the "having had as a father" is the strange bit

bigjoel

"lu ten would be really proud of you" is I think the ultimate, not clumsy way to write it

Xavier Marican

I’ve hardly seen a clip in this show that isn’t awkward, either in writing or performance, so I’m not saying it’s a natural line. Seeing it out of context it just doesn’t feel like that awkwardness makes it illegible as a message for me

Majima Cookie

to counter your counter, having read this comment chain before the video I was still caught off guard by the line and initially thought Zuko was referring to someone other than Irohs actual son. Its really poorly phrased.

caulifloodle

The last line is such a funny misogynistic trope, literally restating what a woman just said but slightly rephrased and coming from a man so it has more gravity. Like it's so obvious it almost feels intentional.

Majima Cookie

I liked these man. But I think you vastly overestimate how much we all retain of your goofy lil vids, when this becomes a real video itll practically be brand new. Also I think the content will significantly be different, experiencing your unhinged rambling thoughts versus you structuring a video around points you want to make is a very different listening experience.

Amber+Eimi

These have been really fun videos and we always get excited to see a new one drop! Like the extra big joel content we need whilst we wait for the bigger vid where all your thoughts are brought together. It's been great!

Ethan Jackson

I subbed to the patreon for these and I don't feel ripped off at all

Caylen Bryant

lol right. I saw someone comment that the writers took away Sokka's sexism just so they could gift it to Aang 💀

caulifloodle

Yeah, I 100% had the same confused reaction on hearing the line of “That’s not right. He did have him as a father. Why would he phrase that that way.”

Holly L

The lu ten conversation disorientated me and my friends so much we had to pause it just to try to puzzle out what the writers even meant by it. What a weird, cold, meaningless replacement for the original scene, where zuko's tiny acknowledgement that he knows iroh thinks of him as a son feels like such a massive character beat.

Mr. Alpacleton

I think it's fun to see people's drafts. This is all bonus anyways, I subscribe cuz I think your big videos are worth paying for :)

Sam Möhler

Reviving a little rat instead of one of the actual human beings that presumably died in that battle is an actual war crime.

Malini Correa

I need these writers to tread real lightly with anything they write about Lu Ten and Iroh's past in general. Cause you just know they're going to accidentally end up glorifying and excusing military service and imperialism (they already did it in the episode where Iroh claims his own actions were justified because he was just "a soldier fighting a war"! Character assassination!).

TitaniaG

Big Joel thank you for these podcasts and don’t worry even if there isn’t much new stuff in the main video I would still like to see it and it was great to see the sausage get made. Thank you!!!

Evan Schmidt

It's a shame the writers cut Sokka's sexism arc, it seems like they could've learned something from it

Evan Schmidt

Only reasons I can think of for the awful change to Zhao's death are a) budgetary (maybe it was gonna be really technically difficult to get the water spirit model to grab him? I dunno that seems really unlikely) or b) they're so set on making Aang a perfect solemn little angel boy that having him even indirectly "kill" Zhao was completely out of the question.

Evan Schmidt

Also I'm definitely not gonna feel ripped off when I watch the main video, especially if you throw in some new tasty tasty nitpicks for us to snack on. Maybe a quick lightning round of points that don't actually matter much but get on your nerves anyway :0?

TitaniaG

Something about episode 8 that bothered me but you didn’t mention is that Yue is still able to water bend after the moon spirit dies which is fine I guess it’s not that important and maybe it’s just spirit magic but it does make my brain go into conspiracy mode if maybe this whole show was written by AI because maybe I believe too much in the human spirit but there are so many continuity or non sensical or linguistical errors or references to lore from the show that don’t matter that it makes me think that’s what happened. I don’t have any proof but it’s just the vibe.

mysticaldesign

When watching the show, I laughed so hard at the momo scene that I genuinely started choking and struggling to breathe. My friends were so concerned they paused the episode. It's still one of the funniest things I've ever seen

Gillian

super excited for the big video, if only because I've forgotten many of the points you've made (I watched through atla for the first time and don't need to watch the live action) and because it's gonna be a good long video to play minecraft to :D

innerchihiro

Amazing series Joel, so looking forward to the final video! I liked the idea that the lady waterbenders became part of the fight, felt like something the original show could have also done with more time. What would have made it better though is if Katara had bonded with these women and discovered that they've been training in secret or something, it would have been a cool way to tie in the themes of the episode Imprisoned where she helped the earthbenders rebel. I too hated the line about being a master, it really conflates this idea of having confidence and having access as you said, but it also just highlights how this show has no interest in depicting bending as a martial art that requires discipline to achieve mastery, and in fact it does what the original tried so hard not to do and turns bending into this nebulous magic where if you believe enough you can do it or whatever lol. Like Aang not waterbending in this show is like Rocky without the training montage, it's just so unsatisfying. I honestly can't even react to Aang attempting to sacrifice himself at the end of the first season lol, it seems like something you'd want to hold onto for a later season, but as a video editor I'm really just pissed off how bad that whole scene compares visually and sonically to the original. All the money in the world and the Nick toon from 2005 is the better cut.

Yeet yourself and everyone around you

We’re about the same age and Avatar was also a huge part of my life growing up. I tried watching this remake and it was immediately clear that it was grist mill slop, so I just couldn’t do it because I have a family and limited time. I’m also an enthusiastic amateur hater, so it’s been very cathartic to see you go through each episode and point out the glaring issues in themes and narrative with the eye of a person who loved and was shaped by the original. Thanks for doing it, love the series and all your other work.

ladyloveandjustice

He didn't even indirectly kill Zhao in the original though, the cartoon goes out of it's way to make sure the audience knows he's in in no way part of it-the spirit like, takes him out and leaves him somewhere before it goes to kill Zhao.
