i love when the protagonist just agrees with whomever talks to them and sponges up their beliefs and just does it ad nauseam forever, it really makes me invested in their character

Ethan Jackson

I still can't believe they just had aang learn nothing yet

ZiggyWSB .

Aang had to replace Sokka as the sexist after they learned how vital that was to fans.

lame_but_endearing

Katara and Aang are ruined as characters in this show. Aang immediately said he wouldn't learn from Pakku if he didn't teach Katara, she had to insist. Then at Sokka's suggestion, Aang tried to teach her what he learned from Pakku in secret. In this shit, Aang is awful and sexist to Katara so she has to get that confidence from Sokka. What an insane way to neuter a feminist character, to give her internal sense of justice and equity away to a male character who needs to provide it for her.

I'm so sorry but look at Yue's fucking wig. It looks like it's made out of concrete I can't

Violet

Sokka’s sexism dropped dead so Aang’s could run like the wind.

The thing with katara taking longer to fight back it does ruin the pacing but also it characterises her so much less. Katara here just has no backbone at all and has to have all her motivation given to her by some guy in her life. Originally she immediately knew what was right and wrong and was pissed off and angry and didn't take anything lying down. She's just so much less a character here and the comparison with this episode really makes it stand out

So glad you included the dinner scene with Katara and Aang. Me and my roommate were dying laughing for like 5 minutes after watching that the first time. “Tastes like..like home” then he just fucking LOOKS AWAY

mysticaldesign

I love how this show is slowly wearing down your ability to comprehend its bizarre choices because I felt the exact same way watching it lmfao

PRAMPLE

Tbf, I think the idea is that aang can't be "home" among Airbenders the way Katara is. It would be a touching scene, but the dialogue, editing and camera work just aren't great.

Mimi

It's so frustrating the original was so good, getting excited to see other water benders only for them to not accept Katara was so impactful you really felt that instant anger with her..now she's mildly perturbed and takes the day to mull it over?? Like??

Evan Schmidt

I was expecting him to ask if he could try some and they could like have a bonding moment over him learning about her culture. But he just kinda awkwardly smiles and lets the conversation die like they're distant relatives who got seated together at a wedding.

As these go on it increasingly feels like long term Netflix Avatar exposure is slowly killing Joel. Hope our boy can make it through episode 8 safely :0

Also the Sokka and Katarra moment is rendered meaningless by them taking away Sokka’s sexism earlier on. Imagine how much more satisfying him telling her to kick Pakku’s ass would be if he had at any point not believed in her water bending abilities. The only reason he had for not respecting her abilities before was fear that the Fire Nation would find and murder her like they did her mom which is totally reasonable and not at all sexist or mean.

Dalton

It’s also a banquet with infinite food…isn’t the obvious choice for her to give him some?? I actually cackled and said “you’re not going to let him taste it?” out loud because that would be like, a normal way for human friends to act, and instead the conversation just dies.

I love this kind of criticism, where the focus is on writing choices and characterization, especially when the choices are this bad and render the story baffling and meaningless
