I received an odd letter one day stating that I had been named as a benefishiary in someone’s will after they had sadly passed. I had never heard the name before and due to the typo, I assumed it to be a scam. That said, I’m never one to turn down a good scam if I can learn from it, so off I trudged to the lawman’s office where he informed me that no it was in fact not a scam. I was in fact named as a “benefishiary” and well here was my new fish. I was taken aback, but when I held the scepter for the first time, I couldn’t help but be enamored by Goldie. I think you’ll love her too.

We have had this idea for far too long and we kept trying to find the right venue to make it happen as part of a collaboration until we just decided to make it ourselves. It was too good of an idea to pass up and just the idea of toting around a forgetful talking goldfish filled me with so much joy that I couldn’t help but want to get it done.

Look, yes I know apparently goldfish don’t have a particularly bad memory. It’s fine sometimes to just paint outside of the lines of reality to make something humorous and enjoyable. That’s advice that I give a lot of creators. We’re making fantasy, magic, steampunk, and weird things. Just go ahead and make the thing fun. You don’t have to base it in reality because we’re already flinging magic and fighting mythical beasts. We can just be cinematic and have a good time.

I actually had to take the design of this one really differently for the 5E and PF2E version as PF2E has some strict rules about items that give access to spells and how they’re cast. I didn’t want to turn this into a full on stave, so I had to crank down the kind of power that the item presented. We first and foremost try to make good items. That means sometimes the approach between the two systems is just vastly different.
