One More Thing: Drudgework Cleaver (Patreon)

Greetings Adventurers,

The second in our line of Drudgework creatures and a fearsome foe to find in any forested area. The Drudgework Cleaver is all about logging and transportation of wood from forest to fireplace or anywhere else. These strong creatures are especially suited to the water and find themselves at home swimming through it. Their formidable spinning fanged blades are ready to tear into anything organic. We hope you enjoy.

Design notes from Matthew:

This one was pretty obviously based on a beaver and from start to finish we wanted to make it fit that theme. We had two basic ideas that began the design process with. The first was that we wanted to highlight a flinging mechanical tail and the second is that we wanted extremely effective buzzsaw teeth to give this thing a powerful bite. From there we jumped off into the rest of it.

The hopper on the back of it was an addition from Fernando's sketching. He figured that it didn't make much sense to have this massive foresting machine and not give it a way to transport some of its materials. These are the kind of things that a visual designer like Fernando can pinpoint while we're in the sketching process and it informs my ability to write interesting creatures.

The tail fling was something I was really excited about from the start. I enjoy mechanics that allow the creatures to do something more than just some basic attacks each round. I feel like several of the base monsters in 5E fall into a trap of being homogenized. We love creating unique mechanics with knockdowns, movement, and really giving these things a sense of power. 

Also it's just fun to do something a little surprising to your players!

This is just the second in our line of Drudgework constructs and we have more to come over the coming months. We can't wait to continue sharing them with you. We love the way they're coming out and we hope you'll make them part of your games!
