Deep under the mountain crags that dominate the surface of the dwarven kingdom, a solitary dwarf toils humming to himself mixing his concoctions and testing them with strips of thin paper. He tries one, holding it up to the candle light in front of him “basic”, he tries another “acidic”, and one more “Ah, now you. You might just work.” He pours some on his hands and responds “Hrmm tingly” before lathering it on his already luscious beard. A moment later the beard bursts forth even bushier than before. He scribbles quickly in the tome on the desk “moderate success”.

Look, sometimes I have weird ideas. I don’t know what else to tell you about the thought process, but in my mind everything can be magical in some way. I don’t think there’s a single item that couldn’t be bent with magic in a fantastical world like the one that we all play in for our adventures. From that mindset, I wanted to put together something dwarven, but atypical. Something that gave people an item that they would never consider a candidate for a magic item. That item was beard oil.

Really the biggest party trick about this is just being able to grow a great big bushy beard. It’s a trick I wish I could replicate in real life, but alas I’ll have to stick with my baby face it seems. The mechanics of it were pretty self explanatory, I wanted to give some benefits that come along with dwarven ancestries, but in a way that could still benefit dwarven characters. I don’t think an item should replace a benefit you have, but rather enhance it.

Some folks will be quick to point out that you can apply this multiple times to yourself. Yes, that’s intended. As there are only 8 uses in the bottle, I thought it would represent an interesting choice if you wanted to try to boost a few people to a CON 20 score or instead give more people a smaller boost, or one person a small boost several times. It offers an interesting choice.

If we wanted to make the most popular items out there, we really could just make swords over and over again. That would get highly boring for me though. I think delving into the weirder item side is a lot more interesting and offers unexpected variety for your players. Hopefully you can find some use in magical beard oil!
