One More Thing: Boreal Crowns (Patreon)

Greetings Adventurers,

It is said that far away across untold icy tundras and fields of snow lie fortresses containing beings much different than us. They shield themselves from the outside world and have adapted to the inhospitable conditions of these long frozen lands. Within these fortresses lives the old royalty of long forgotten civilizations, said to control the very lights that brighten the northern sky. Whether you consider these tales to be true, or just the musings of bored bards is up to you. What is to be sure is that this crown is very real and seems destined to place itself on the head of those that will rise to greatness.

Design notes from Matthew:

These were a bit of a pain to design. I'm not going to sugar coat it and say it was easy to get something that evolves over time with you. The problem often comes with the idea that everyone expects to get "more" out of an item if it scales up. They don't just want better, but they want more features as well. This creates a problem where an item can get bloated very quickly.

To combat this, I actually designed these in reverse. I created what I felt to be a properly themed and balanced legendary crown that had features shaped around the aurora and ice palaces that I had in my head. After that, it was a matter of pairing each part back until I had an acceptable version of it at a lower rarity.

I'll admit, I tried tackling it the other way and there are a few google docs that will never see the light of day due to how overly cumbersome the items became by the end. Here I think I hit a good balance of not only getting more, but better as each perk increases along with the power.
