Greetings adventurers!

Look, I’m not even going to pretend to understand where this one came from. I have heard tall tales of fishermen about man-eating boats and the like but I’ve never been one to buy into the hogwash of fish stories. That said, the organic nature of this piece fused with the wood of its handle does create an oddly compelling case for something being out there in the oceans blue. Well, perhaps some day we’ll get a more documented sighting of this creature. Until then, I remain a skeptic, though a curious one.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

It’s time again to bring you an item designed to pair with a creature. It’s one of my favorite things writing these pairs monthly. There’s a lot of fun to be had creating mechanics centered around tuned versions of monster mechanics. This one is all about grabs and persistent damage.

I think some of the best advice I can give for writing an item is picking a theme and sticking to it. It can get tempting to just start adding in all the possible uses of an item, but that’s how you end up with something extremely messy very quickly. Instead, I think it’s a much better idea to just pick your theme and stay within it despite the temptations of all of the cool ideas around it. Don’t waste those ideas though, write them down for use later when you’re stuck.

For this piece, I knew the grab mechanic was going to be a pretty safe bet as I wanted to make sure it felt like a shark themed weapon and the grab and pull would be iconic for that. The persistent damage on PF2E or damage at the start of turns for 5E really just felt right considering sharks and their scent for blood. The regrowth mechanic was flavor to start with, but I saw a fun opportunity to make it a cooldown mechanic and rode with it.

I just love when we get the opportunity to make a greatsword. They’re so iconic and this one is such a unique flavor that I think we created something really special. Later on today we’ll be releasing our creature to pair it with. I don’t know if you’re ready, because man is it a weird one.

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
