Greetings adventurers!

There are several natural phenomena in this world that one could consider magical, and a total solar eclipse is one that I say would easily count. Standing in the shadow of one of the moons. Basking in the odd twilight of it while looking towards a blacked out sun above is just something that everyone should try to experience once in their lives. I was so inspired by the last one, that I got to crafting a cloak to mimic it’s awesome powers right after. Luckily I still had some velvet laying around!

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

Look, this is a shameless attempt to try to celebrate something that I got to see finally last week. I’ve never been in the path of a solar eclipse before so it was huge to get to experience it. I wanted to make something to share that enthusiasm. The cloak with a totality blocking the face was just a cool aesthetic option and I feel like Fernando nailed that perfectly. It was a really unique experience and one that I hope many of you can share in, at some point.

I wanted to keep the environmental effects across both versions of this as I felt like it really added to the flavor of the item. The silence of the creatures, the slight temperature drop, these are things you experience during a totality and it felt appropriate to bring that into the item form as well. These are most flavorful so it was pretty easy to carry that across both of our versions.

For the actual mechanics of it all, well I had to look into how light and darkness work in both systems for a bit. It’s one of those mechanics that you probably don’t engage with as often as you should. Thankfully light levels are pretty well shared across the systems, but how darkness works is totally different. It made a lot more sense in the PF2E version to just allow it to cast Darkness as the spell takes care of a lot of the minutia. For the 5E version. I wanted an altered form of darkness that didn't affect the player and also lasted a bit longer so I borrowed the language from the spell. Don’t be afraid to pull from what’s out there if it’s part of the OGL!

Consider this our little homage to an amazing natural phenomena and something that we were excited to see from our neck of the woods. I think this could be a very powerful item to drop in any home game or put it on a high level enemy and watch the wonder and fear unfold. That’s the kind of stuff we hope to design here and we hope you enjoy the stories these items can help you forge.

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
