Greetings adventurers!

Crystals have never been my thing. I prefer to leave that to those that go delving in the deep dark recesses to pull out whatever they may find, though I will admit I occasionally buy one or two that have interesting properties. When an associate told me they had been postulating that magics could be split much the same as light with the use of the correct type of prism, well I was just intrigued. I funded a little expedition to see if we could dig up just such a prism. While it latest way too long and was far over budget, we did indeed succeed in finding just such a thing, and I knew exactly how to sell it!

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:
Designing to fit the type of item you’re making seems like the obvious choice, but sometimes the most obvious isn’t the most fun. Typically shields are thought of as defensive options and there is an assumed design goal where you should offer defensive boons when making a magical shield. Every once in awhile, I like to challenge that by offering something that could have potential for offensive properties, such as this shield here.

In 5E, I targeted a higher rarity as I think expanding the range of any spell is quite powerful. Heck, metamagic and the ability to shape your spells takes up a whole class utility slot, so you have to be very careful with how you balance anything that alters range/shape of spells. I had this idea in my head of a paladin casting lay on hands in a group rather than on an individual and that was where the design started. Restricting it to once a day was an absolute necessity considering the power of shaping spells.

For our Pathfinder 2E version, I didn’t have a lot of base design to go off of. There are some options that do similar things in the Pathfinder books, but nothing very direct. I decided that this should be a free action to burst forward the spell instead of making it a reaction as it felt a little bad eating more of a turn when you’re already casting a spell. Again this had to be limited to once a day and had to have quite a high item level just to balance how powerful it is.

One of the things I’m trying to tackle this year is writing in a way that is much more clear and concise, leaving flavor for the start and focusing hard on writing mechanically sound abilities for the rest. I think it’s a good exercise to never be quite happy with where you are and always strive to improve. That’s just what works for me!

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
