Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn aren't the only WWE contracts coming due in the near future.

Fightful learned that NXT Triple Crown Champion Johnny Gargano's WWE contract is expiring December 3, 2021. WWE sources confirmed the news with Fightful Select on Monday afternoon. Thus far, WWE sources have indicated to Fightful that Johnny Gargano and WWE have not entered into negotiations to extend his contract, but that WWE "expected to" in the Fall.

It was specified to us that this wasn't a case similar to Adam Cole and Pete Dunne where the contract coming due came as a surprise, and the company has reviewed many of the deals since those and the Malakai Black 30 day non-compete situation. It was also mentioned that roughly around the time Gargano's deal is up is when the company thought that Adam Cole's contract would expire, and the company had planned on speaking with them both ahead of that period prior to the shocker that Cole was coming due earlier.

Gargano has been with WWE since 2015, but officially signed with the company in 2016.

Johny in AEW would just about complete my fantasy roster. KOR and Bobby Fish and I'm done.

Johnny Elite!

Nathan Tipton

Is there a running list of expiring contracts somewhere?

Kyle Cotton

This is one of those that I honestly couldn’t imagine Johnny working anywhere else but NXT.

I literally had a discussion yesterday about who I’d most like to see in AEW and Gargano was at the top of the list. This is wild. What a time to be a wrestling fan!

So happy I subscribed to select. Yall are the Woj of free agent news. Great job breaking these stories. Wrestling free agency is becoming big news like NBA free agency

Rebel Heart going All Elite? That would really be something.

Do you know anything about candice's contract did they have a similar length deal?

Anonymous

Maybe he can take some time off and try to get pregnant like he talked about in that interview

Anonymous

Oh wow, he's done everything he can in NXT and main roster could be bleak. If he were to jump I'd be more interested in Candice coming over down the line

Why does no one think WWE will re-sign him??

Anonymous

Hey, that's Radical ;)

Johnny /is/ NXT tho

Jon Blain

I can’t either and imagine it’ll be relatively smooth negotiations

Thomas Middaugh

He's one I'd expect to easily re-sign with WWE

Jared Searcy

I have a hard time seeing Gargano leaving. Even if he’s not the main event guy, there are so many young talents in WWE that could benefit from working with Gargano in the ring.

Dan Franks

They can keep him

jOhNnY iS nXt…guys, if they’re “restructuring” the brand away from smaller Indy-style guys, he won’t “be nxt” much longer.

Joel Wood

I expect him to stay. I expect Owens to leave. I don’t know about Zayn. But Candice just getting pregnant is gonna be a factor. I know people will reply with “Well he doesn’t need the money” and that maybe true but that’s not the point. We don’t know Candices contract status for one. He may not want to go to another company away from his newborn for two. Three, even though he may not need the money, having a stable job helps and Johnny is one of those guys that would have a job for life IF he wanted to stay. Now of course I’m not Johnny so I don’t know his motivations. I’m just speaking as someone who was once a new father and I didn’t even want to spend one minute away from her.

It’s crazy the flood of talent coming out of WWE this year (assuming all these guys leave when their contracts expire). As much as I’d love to see every one of them go there, AEW can’t possibly sign all these people. As it is, I think they’ve gotta be close to capacity with the size of their roster. Not just because of the amount of screen time and all that, but the cost of the contracts as well. It’s tough, though, because if you can get guys who are as good as Bray Wyatt, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn, you’d be crazy to pass them up. Besides their sheer level of talent, they’re also all moneymakers who sell a lot of merch. Gargano is great too, but hasn’t been at the same level as those guys as far as recognition by more casual viewers. He’s also a guy who could flourish in AEW, though, just as he has in NXT.

His ceiling is much lower in AEW than any of their recent signings. I don’t think he wants to work the indies anymore, he probably re-signs.

If he doesn't stay with WWE, I'd love for him to go to NJPW and chase the Super Jr's title. Their roster is stacked and would be fun watch.

Gargano and Adam Cole in a match at a takeover got my wife into wrestling but she only likes AEW, so it would be pretty cool to have em both at home. 😁

Rincewind

I see him going to the main roster, if he chooses to stay. I normally would say there's no way they'd let him go, but this years really been an eye opener about their lack of respect for the NXT brand.

This would’ve had a more impactful story to it if AEW hadn’t signed much larger names/personalities than him. I include Black/Andrade in that also. I like Gargano as a wrestler and he’d definitely have a place in AEW but it would be mid card with potential spotlighted runs for me. The Ciampa storyline aside, I’ve not seen anything inspired by him (I didn’t see all of the him/Cole stuff granted but you can’t fail with Cole). Personal opinion - Candice would be the bigger “get” if she can come over. Potential break of ground when it comes to intergender if she signed too which I’m sure is a measure of curiosity in the AEW execs.

Steveisnotmyname

Tony Khan has said he's not interested in having any intergender wrestling in AEW, so if Candice ever did go there (and I agree she'd be more impactful to their roster than Johnny), it would be strictly as a member of the women's division. She's going to be having a baby soon, though, so I don't think she'll be wrestling again anytime soon. For all we know she might even retire to raise their kid. So if we ever did see her in AEW, it wouldn't be for a long time. Not to mention her contract isn't up soon from anything we've heard. She and Johnny didn't sign at the same time.
