i need a Jess 2023 Drama review

Kevin

one aspect that i feel like was missing for me with Zyko and Dykens is the outfits. i think it wouldve been beautiful if they wore some traditional hanfus or something… but the sweatpants kinda lost it for me.

JessReacts764

Completely agree! I feel like they really dropped the ball regarding costuming this go around.

What an episode. I was shocked at who Vanness eliminated, too. I got 2 out of 5 correct :/ Though it's understandable, battlers are more valuable as the competition closes out. I think Vanness thought that Kite and Madoka's skillsets are too similar to justify having them both on the team, but still, it didn't hurt any less. One thing about the concept: I think that they explained it poorly, but it wasn't just limited to Chinese folk dance but an overall reflection of Chinese culture in the dance. The dance performances by Ding's Team 1, Jay's Team 2, and Vanness's Team 2 are all reflections of a more modern spin on Chinese dance (though I'm not Chinese myself so take it with a grain of salt). I've seen similar performances dubbed Chinese-style in shows outside of SDC and even some non-TV dance competitions. The one thing I would note is that Vanness's Team 2 (Ibuki/Dedson), even though it was a really nice performance overall, felt really predictable to me. I've seen the same song performed almost in the exact same way - minus the gorgeous lifts - but from the outfits, settings, to the plot and the ending twist, it just felt recycled. Maybe it's just the song itself that lends to this interpretation, but that was my only nitpick. But then again, you mentioned before that it comparing to other performances isn't healthy, so maybe I'm just too invested lol

You aren't wrong! My meaning for comparing the dancers in question to their other routines isn't the best, but comparing the routine concept to a completely different circumstance is totally fine! It's a way to ensure "biting" is kept in check from a choreographic lens so to speak! SO your nitpick is 1000% valid!

Seconding what Mini mentioned, the name of this round was "双人中文歌作品", which can be somewhat directly translated as "two-person Chinese song performance." In this case, the "Chinese song" portion of the phrase doesn't have any traditional connotation, while the phrase Van Ness used in episode 6 to introduce Yusie's group did imply a more traditional or cultural style. Based on that, I think the only requirement this time around was to use a Chinese track (be that lyrical or instrumental). But that obviously wasn't explained well, so I totally understand why it might be confusing! From my perspective as a non-dancer, I think the issue with Zyko and Dykens' performance was that they decided to go the Chinese folk route, but didn't really end up showcasing any of their chosen concept in their dancing or styling. While Iris and Poppin C or Poppin ED and Marco just chose songs with Chinese lyrics, so there wasn't any expectation to deliver any traditional aspects in their performance. (Also, disclaimer that my Chinese is passable, but not the best. So if anyone feels that what I've said is incorrect feel free to correct me!)

I really enjoyed some of the performances this week but wow the slow motion & some other editing ended up being distracting. There was some of it in the previous episodes but they really took it up a notch in this one. I hope you do get a chance to react to the earlier seasons somewhere down the line! Season 4 I think is probably the most popular and the first invite only season. But the seasons before were also good (Apple I first saw on S3 and really liked). Idk if the judging will be more stressful to react to, there was a lot more of team captains casting votes based on preference. I don't want to give too many spoilers but Hilty & Bosch were presented as a duo along with 3 other pairs in the beginning. They don't really seem like they have specific rules in mind for splitting people up, more so just if the # of dancers match up nicely near the end.

JessReacts764

Gotcha! Thank you so much for the clarification!!! I will say this then, why did Iris, Poppin C and Marco/Poppin Ed score SO LOW in comparison to the routines that demostrated a more fold interpretation? That's my only question now that I still have haha!

JessReacts764

Gotcha! I don't know if I can handle watching that one from a judging standpoint but I can totally vibe with the battles and choreography challenges haha! Now knowing how wild the judging is, I can probably mentally prepare myself for it haha!

PaperPen

These are just my personal thoughts, but I think this stems from cultural performances tending to be better received and higher rated on SDC then other types of performances (AC/ZaiZai and Apple/Kenken in this case). So, I think if Zyko/Dykens had delivered more on those traditional aspects they also would have received one of the higher scores. I think of it as a double-edged sword. If you deliver on a traditional concept you can be highly rewarded for it, but if you don't, you can get penalized more heavily than you might by failing to deliver on some other concept (although this is not always the case!). There are of course other aspects involved, like the cleanliness and complexity of the routine which you mentioned, but I definitely think this sort of thing played a role in the scores being what they were. Now, if this is the case, how proper it is to have that sort of bias when scoring is a whole other question! (when I get to this point, I just tend to stop and remind myself that it's just a tv show lol) Hope this justification made at least a little bit of sense!

JessReacts764

No this is EXACTLY what I was needing to hear! Thank YOU for teaching me something new regarding these dynamics!

Kevin

id like if u could talk about each drama u watched this year (summarize?) and rate on a scale of 1-10 (or if u wanted to go more detailed rate it multiple facets like plot, characters, rewatchability, and anything else u could think of). youve mentioned dramas alot in these reacts so i think itd be fun

Mini

One thing I will say is that as wild as SDC judging can be, it will never be as wild as SWF1/SMF1 calls lol

inconsistent enjoyer

(skipping through the judging because im not on the mood for it 🙃) During dykens and zyko performance even though im not all that familliar with chinese folk dances i could tell exactly which moments were inspired just by how unnatural it felt on their bodies by comparison, and it was a bit jarring Also i really do not care about the captains comments after the performaces because 80% of the time they are just saying words And vanness eliminations, sure controversial Hahaha the survival guy you talked about lelush what a legend, they can actually leave. His story needs a bit more context 😂 Anyway i already spoiled myself with the winner of this season, not my pick but deserved. I was much more surprised with the finalists

JessReacts764

I just finished recording and I was happy with the winner considering all the factors... But GOODNESS I don't know how much of a fan I am about how they structure the choreography rounds for this show because it just feels like it's used as a "fun" challenge when it's not treated as well as the appropriate adjudication that battles have.

inconsistent enjoyer

for me it has too much choreo to be battle focused and too little importance/respect given to choreo to be a battle+choreo show. it stays in an insatisfactory limbo
