So this came out following Soojin’s departure and it was a whole mess. During Soojin’s allegations and court case the group was on a hiatus which continued after Soojin left. I’m not entirely sure of the timeline but at some point the members each went back to their respective countries. (Minnie to Thailand, Yuqi to China, Shuhua to Taiwan and Soyeon and Miyeon stayed in Korean) This was when they did some solo projects. I remember Soyeon talking about how this album was their only chance to get it right. They had to prove that they could still function as a group and make money without Soojin. She also talked about being very angry during this period and how that affected her writing. This period was really hard for the members especially Shuhua because Soojin was Shuhua’s first friend in Korea. The members are still not allowed to talk about Soojin directly but they allude to her sometimes. This also marks the beginning of Yuqi and Shuhua dissing Cube. (Which I love)

This is soooo heartbreaking.... Allegations are the legit WORST because they take up A LOT of time and resources to debunk at the expense of the artist. It's so hard a lot of times because you know that netizens like to be the "jury" on things like this and have a verdict before anything is actually verified which sucks so much... Makes so much sense why groups have a huge maturity jump from debut to recent years because of this exact thing.... I am alll here for dissing Cube.... DO IT!

TOMBOY's transgressiveness and impact really can't be overstated imo. On top of what everyone else has said about how feminism is still not accepted mainstream: tomboy as a word also had negative connotations when this song came out. On top of *that*, the way all feminists are portrayed as man-hating women is partially the response towards a minority of Korean feminist movements who espouse violence towards men (as a direct response to the violence Korean women face on a day-to-day basis) - so even the MV being around 5 women coming together to kill a man is just as risky as the song's own content is. Also, with the song content: Yes, the chorus is censored directly in the track with the beep sound - the CD uncensored version directly says "I'm a fucking tomboy". Soyeon's second verse was also changed - I am not sure if the change in question was just the censored "I like to eh drinking whisky" bit (which was "I like to sex drinking whisky" in the uncensored version) or if the verse was more different before. In sum, huge risk. I-DLE was never unpopular, but they had started modestly. They had slowly increased their popularity and impact, and they were consistently getting more popular all the way up to Queendom and right after. But with Soojin's scandal and the hiatuses mentioned above... Well, yeah, no one really expected that even if I-DLE returned, they'd recapture their previous success. But the song *blew up*. It dominated the charts, got them their first PAK, swept show wins, was everywhere, and is still super popular. So, it's not even a story of how I-DLE was able to "come back" from disaster, they actually flourished like never before. (To compare: their major EP release before the scandal, I Burn, sold 200k+. Post-scandal, I NEVER DIE, sold 300k+. The popularity they got from TOMBOY showed itself fully with the next major EP: 800k+! The other major Korean releases all sold more than 1 mil. They continued to dominate in charts as well.) This album really gets me. I especially love Villain Dies, LIAR and Already (which is super funny considering they're Soyeon-led, Yuqi-led and Minnie-led, respectively). The anger, indignation and despair apparent in all songs in very different ways really hit me in the chest every time I listen to them. Already especially has a very special place in my heart now. Every time I listen to it, it momentarily suspends time and space for me. I'm still so sad that Soojin left in such an unfair way, and it's hard not to see its full effect on these songs, especially Villain Dies and Already. Also, circling back to TOMBOY and Soyeon's second verse: I definitely agree with you that the "ping pong" is a reference to HyunA and Dawn's song! It fits like a glove there since that song is about a seductive relationship. It makes so much sense for Soyeon to reference it since TOMBOY is basically about opting out of all that. I'll be honest, I never liked that verse and I probably never will, but I respect the fuck out of it because it gets the job DONE very clearly and I can't help but see how all the "random" things she lists like dancing with friends, swearing, drinking alcohol, references to smoking, sex... are basically the things Soojin was accused of doing as a kid next to the bullying charges. Nevermind that they weren't the *focus* of the scandal, but all of that getting tacked onto her reputation (some true, some untrue, none justifying the intense hatred they elicited) and being used to drag her through the mud is maddening to me, and no one can convince me that this didn't play a role in that verse and how in your face it is. I also think the use of English was very strategic, especially in hindsight with their track Wife*. (Semi-related, Soyeon's first verse and the pre-chorus are so addictive, I can'ttttttttt.) *I won't get into much detail now, but let's just say what is English and what is Korean in that track *really* coloured how it was received by the Korean-speaking public versus how it was received by the English-speaking public. (Honestly, both got trolled. Everyone got trolled. It's peak Soyeon tbh.)

This is incredible. Thank you for sharing just how impactful this track truly is. Love the fact that they were able to ounce back but part of me is saddened that Soojin wasn't able to be a part of that bounce back. I hope they continue to be impactful to the industry because it is needed. If everyone did the same thing, the it wouldn't feel like there is any room for genuine connection. I also hope they are able to experience an era of peace. DOn't get me wrong I LOVE this era of kick ass, but I also want them to have joy interwoven in their tracks as well!
