Hey hello all you lovely people!

I did a quick audio recording here talking about the theme of power, how I'm not really satisfied with how power is represented in contemporary fantasy fiction, and how I love to rail on the Stormlight Archive (kidding about that last part - or am I?)

If you're a fan of these or would like to suggest a topic for future recordings, let me know below.

Cheers,

Abbadon

Im actually 5 chapters deep into a Broken World campaign with my friends who follow the comic. We are trying to balance the inherent power fantasy qualities of an rpg with the narrative of the campaign and it can be hard to balance sometimes. I have to usually step back and think, is it really okay for me to kill this thing right now, what are my alternatives and what could the consequences of my choices be. If our characters are going to become powerful, we want it to be more complex than just "we are the most shonen deal with it". Also cool to see you dig Gurren Lagann.

I really enjoyed listening to this. I recently set out to write some sort of power fantasy story... and then quickly realized I couldn't, because I'm sort of a pacifist. So I've resolved to write a story with empathy and forgiveness as the source of power. That's basically just to say, I feel some of those same feels you feel when I read shonen-style progressions of violent power in stories. You talked about your confusion with people who think Allison will end up using violence in that way. Despite the fact that she doesn't seem to have that kind of motivation or inclination, it seems like a reasonable assumption that she would end up... well... killing six billion demons. The top of chapter two (I think) where she poses with dead demons with the giant sword feels a lot like a "things to come" shot. She could easily still be a reluctant hero type, and she's certainly set up to follow the might-is-right, fight-to-the-throne story. We've got the unjust and violent world, we've got a prophecy, we've got power increase. The fact that you don't see this, and you're more likely to subvert the standard is really awesome to me. :)

Funny enough I did those splash pages totally aware that nothing of that sort would actually happen for a while in the comic. But I think it's a lot more satisfying when we get to the point that Allison does actually become a more heroic character.
