※The English version is also below. ※글자수 제한으로 한국어판은 별도 기사입니다. 『クレア＝フランソワを差し出しなさい。さもなければ一日に一つずつ、世界の国々を滅ぼして行きます』 　魔王はとんでもないことを言い出した。 　でも、ヤツの強大な力を考えれば、それが与太話ではないことは分かる。 　ただ、これをリアルに受け止める人間がどれだけいるだろうか。 　そもそもこの世界のほとんどの人間は、魔王なんていう存在そのものを知らないのに。 　私が疑問に思っていると、魔王はさらにとんでもないことを言い出した。 『私のことをご存じない方に知って頂くために、一つ力を示しましょう。これはバウアーにある山です』 　私の脳裏に映像が結ばれた。 　見えるのはサッサル山だった。 　標高四千メートルを超えると言われる雄大な姿は見る者を圧倒する。 　これを見せているのも魔王の魔法なのだろうか。 『よく見ていて下さい』 　すると、東の方から地鳴りが響いてきた。 「……なっ！？」 　映像が切り替わり、帝都ルームから青い波動がほとばしるのが見えた。 　それは遙かバウアーとの国境を飛び越え、サッサル山に山腹に直撃した。 　地鳴りがびりびりと建物を震わせ、同時に気温が急激に下がっていく。 　皆が地面に伏せて頭を守る。 　地震は数分に及んだ。 「おいおい……冗談キツイぜ」　 　地震が収まってすぐ、ロッド様の呆然とした声が聞こえた。 　それはすぐに、その場にいた全員に伝播した。 　無理もない。 　私たちが見た光景はそれほどに衝撃的なものだった。 　魔王の放った波動は、サッサル山を氷漬けにしていた。 　理屈は分かる。 　きっとあれは私も使う水属性の攻撃魔法アブソリュートゼロなのだろう。 　対象を瞬時に氷結させる超適性の魔法だ。 　だが、その対象が何百キロも離れた巨大な火山なんていう馬鹿げた話があるだろうか。 　少なくとも、私にはどう逆立ちしたって無理な芸当だ。 　構図は逆さまだが、今のはメラゾーマではない、メラだ――をリアルに体感した気分である。 『私の言うことが嘘ではないことがお分かり頂けたでしょう。繰り返します。私には人類を破滅させるだけの力があります』 　淡々とした、感情のない声は続く。 『猶予を二週間与えましょう。それまでにクレア＝フランソワをナー帝国帝都ルームに差し出して下さい。彼女の容姿はこのようなものです」 　また映像が切り替わり、クレア様の姿が映し出された。 　まるで指名手配のようだ。 　実際、それそのものと言って間違いない。 『各国の指導者たちの賢明な判断を求めます』 　そう締めくくって、念話は終わった。 　各国のトップの反応は早かった。 「ヒルダ、国民に向けて緊急の念話の準備を！」 「ただちに！」 　フィリーネが素早くヒルダに指示を飛ばした。 　ヒルダが弾かれたように議場を飛び出して行く。 「セイン、お前も一度バウアーに戻れ。バウアーの国民は今の光景を生で見たはずだ。パニックになるだろう」 「……しかし、魔王との戦いが……」 　ロッドの提案にセイン陛下が渋い顔をした。 「こう言っちゃあなんだけど、長いこと実戦を離れてるセイン兄さんじゃあ、魔王との戦いには足手まといだと思うよ」 「……む」 「ここはロッド兄さんとボクに任せて？」 　逡巡するセイン陛下に、ユー様が現実を突きつけて促す。 「セイン陛下。陛下には陛下にしか出来ないことがありましょう。あなたは国民から大きく信頼されている。バウアーを落ち着かせて下さい」 「……分かった。魔王に対する国の方針は、お前に一任するぞ、ユー。ドル、お前も来い」 「かしこまりました」 　そう言うと、セイン陛下とドル様も足早に議場を出て行った。 「マナリア、キミはどうするんだい？」 　ウィリアム陛下が問うた。 「ボクは残るよ。手前味噌だけど、魔王戦にはボクの力が必要だろうからね。スースも心配だけど、優先順位の問題だ」 　スースのことは残して来た王族や貴族を信じるしかない、とマナリア様は答えた。 「あなたこそどうするんだい？」 「ぼくかい？　そうだねぇ。魔王への対応をどうするか決めたら、ぼくもアパラチアに戻ることにするよ」 　ぼくは戦闘はからっきしだからね、とウィリアム陛下はおどけた。 　こんな時でも彼は道化っぽい言動をやめない。 　あるいは、今のこの空気をほぐそうとしているのかもしれない。 「問題は魔王からの要求にどう対応するか、ですね」 　ミシャの言葉に、一同がしんとしてしまう。 　私は慌てて口を開いた。 「どうもなにもないでしょ。応じるわけにいかないよ」 　魔王の要求に応じると言うことは、クレア様を差し出すということだ。 　そんなことが出来るわけがない。 「レイ、ことはそう簡単ではありませんわ」 「クレア様……」 「この場にいる者はあなたと同じように考えてくれているでしょう。でも、あの映像を見た全世界の人々を簡単に説得出来ると思って？」 　私は言葉に詰まってしまった。 　今のは確かに衝撃的な映像だったからだ。 　山という自然には存在感がある。 　悠然と、ただそこにあるだけで人々を圧倒する。 　ましてサッサル山は大きな火山だ。 　そんな存在を魔王は一瞬で氷漬けにしてしまった。 　完全に人知を超えた所業である。 　そんなことが可能な存在から脅しを掛けられて、立ち向かう勇気を持てる者が果たしてどれくらいいるだろう。 「でも、それじゃあクレア様は大人しく魔王の元に行くつもりなんですか！？　殺されることが分かりきっているのに！？」 　クレア様が犠牲になるなんて冗談じゃない。 　そもそも、クレア様が殺されたら、本当に人類は終わりなのだ。 　魔王がまだ人類を滅ぼしていないのは、クレア様がループの中に存在しているからだ。 「そんなことになるくらいなら、逃げちゃいましょうよ！　私がどこまでもお供します」 「一体、どこへ？　今の念話は世界中に流されたはずですわ。逃げる場所なんてどこにもないでしょう？」 　そう言って、クレア様は笑った。 　私はクレア様がまた自己犠牲精神を発揮してしまったのかと思った。 　しかし――。 「そんな顔しないで、レイ。わたくしは別に死ぬつもりはありませんわよ？」 「え……？」 　クレア様の笑顔には諦観の色は全くなかった。 　むしろ、戦う気満々という感じだった。 「レイ、今度こそ、あなたとの約束を果たしますわ」 「約束……？」 「革命の時には反故にしてしまった、いつかの誓い。決して、諦めない――そう約束しましたわよね？」 「あ……」 　二度の勝負で交わした私との約束。 　どんな時も決して諦めないという神への誓いを、クレア様は今こそ果たすと言っているのだ。 「クレア様……」 「何か、方法があるはずですわ。犬死になんてまっぴらですもの」 「はい！」 「ちょっと、レイ！　こんなところで……はーなーしーなーさい！」 　私は嬉しくなってクレア様に抱きついた。 　クレア様はわたわたしている。 「あっはっは。安心したぜ。お前らが折れてねぇなら大丈夫だ」 「ロッド様……」 「いくら俺が力を貸してやりたくても、肝心のお前らが折れちまってたらどうしようもねぇからな」 「ご助力頂けるんですの？」 「ああ。たった今、俺にも魔王とやらに一発くれてやる理由が出来たからな」 「それは？」 　私がクレア様に抱きつきながら問うと、 「サッサル火山をやりやがった。親父の仇のあの山を。近いうちに俺がねじ伏せようと思ってたのによ」 　そう言ったロッド様の顔には複雑な色が浮かんでいた。 　いつも快活そのものなロッド様には、珍しい表情だった。 「ロッド様……って、あなたはいつまで抱きついてますのよ！？」 「えー、もうちょっとー」 「あっはっは！」 　ロッド様に笑われながら、私はクレア様を存分に堪能した後、その身体を解放した。 「もう……。でも、実際、どうしたものかしら……。今のままではお姉様たち国のトップによる説得も難しいでしょうし」 「そうですね……」 　タイムに事の始まりを見せられたマナリア様たちは、納得しているかどうかはこの際別として、クレア様が魔族たちの手に掛かったら終わりであることは理解している。 　でも、普通の人々にそれをどう説明するのか。 　タイムが使ったバーチャルリアリティなしに、それを行うのは困難を極める。 　二人して悩んでいると、 「手をお貸ししましょうか？」 　助力を申し出る声があった。 「タイム……」 「精霊教会の権威の下に、人々を説得してみることは出来るかもしれませんよ」 　相変わらずリリィ様に取り憑いているタイムは、そんなことを提案してきた。 　なるほど、それは確かに可能性としてはありうる。 　精霊教会は全世界規模で信者を持つ、この世界最大の宗教勢力だ。 　貧者救済、医療の提供などの活動を長年にわたって続けて来た結果、今では民の精神的なよりどころとなっている。 　各国政府が民にとってやや雲の上の存在であるのに対して、精霊教会は常に民の生活と共にあろうとしてきた。 　そんな彼らの言葉なら、あるいは人々も耳を貸すかも知れない。 「でも、難しいですわよ？　期限はあと二週間しかありませんわ。それまでにどうやって世界の人々を納得させるんですの？」 「念話を使います。魔王と同じ、全世界規模のものを」 　私たちシステムにも、それくらいの力はあるんですよ、とタイムは言った。 「もちろん、いち枢機卿であったリリィ＝リリウムや、バウアーでしか知名度のないユー＝バウアーでは説得の効果は薄いでしょう」 「それは確かに……」 「あ。なら、さっきのバーチャルリアリティを皆にも見せるんですか？」 　それならあるいは、と私は思ったのだが。 「それは出来ません。この世界の真実は一般の人には理解が難しいでしょうし、理解されたらされたで反発を覚える人もいるでしょう。最悪、あなたが糾弾されることになりますよ、レイ＝テイラー」 　危険すぎます、とタイムは言った。 　確かに、この世界がループしているという事実は、容易に理解を得られるものではない。 　それを理解したとして、そのループを私事で終わらせようとしているのは私――厳密には違うが――だ。 　責任を取れと言われても私にはどうしようもないし、今はそんな場合ではない。 「なら、どうしますの？」 　クレア様の問いに、タイムはこう答えた。 「教皇――クラリス＝レペテ三世に演説させます。彼女もまた、この世界の真実を知る一人なのですよ」 *Translation below was made possible with the help of Angela and Jingle. Otherwise, I shall destroy the countries of the world one day at a time.’ The Demon Queen said something outrageous. But considering her immense power, I understood that she wasn’t kidding. However, I wondered how many people would accept it as true. In the first place, most people in this world don't even know that there is such a thing as the Demon Queen. While I was lost in thoughts, the Demon Queen said something even more ridiculous. “I shall demonstrate my power to convince those who haven’t heard of me. This is a mountain in Bauer’ I saw a video in my mind. It showed Mount Sassal. It was said to be over for thousands meters high, and its very sight filled me with awe. What sort of magic the Demon Queen used to show it to me, I wondered. ‘Watch closely.’ At that moment, rumbling could be heard from the east. “... Wha!?” The image changed, and I saw a blue wave surge from the Imperial Capital Raum. It flew over the border of the distant Bauer and struck the side of Mount Sassal. The ground rumbled, shaking the buildings, and the temperature suddenly dropped. Everybody got down and protected their heads. The earthquake lasted several minutes. “Oi oi… What sort of bad joke is this.” As soon as the earthquake subsided, I heard Rod-sama’s dumbfounded voice. His confusion spread to everybody around in no time. No wonder. The scene we had seen was just that shocking. The wave the Demon Queen fired had frozen Mount Sassal. I understood the theory behind it. I was sure it was the water-attribute attack magic, Absolute Zero, that I could also use. It’s a top-grade magic that instantly freezes the target. But, freezing an entire huge volcano hundreds of kilometers away was completely absurd. At the very least, it would be an impossible feat for me, no matter how hard I tried. Although the details were different, I felt like I experienced first hand the quote - “It’s not Kafrizz… It’s Frizz.” [TLN: An iconic quote from Dragon Quest. The Demon Lord made that remark after the basic version of a spell he used was confused for a much stronger spell due to its power.] ‘You can see that what I’m saying is not a lie. I repeat. I have the power to destroy humanity.’ The calm, emotionless voice continued. ‘I shall give you two weeks. Deliver Claire François to the Imperial Capital Raum of the Naa Empire until then. This is what she looks like.’ The image changed once again, showing Claire-sama’s appearance. It looked just like a wanted poster. In fact, that was what it was. ‘I hope for prudent decisions from leaders of each country.’ With that, the telepathic connection cut off. The reaction of the top brass gathered here was swift. “Hilda, prepare to telepathically contact the citizens immediately!” “I’m on it!” Philine quickly gave Hilda instructions. Hilda ran out of the assembly room as if she was on fire. “Sein, return to Bauer for now. The citizens must’ve seen that scene firsthand. They will panic for sure.” “... Mountains have intrinsic presence. Just by being there they overwhelm people. Moreover, Mount Sassal is a large volcano. And the Demon Queen instantly froze it. It was a feat beyond human understanding. Just how many people would have the courage to fight against a being who could do something like that as a threat? “Then Claire-sama, do you just intend to meekly surrender yourself to the Demon Queen!? You know you’ll be killed!” Claire-sama becoming a sacrifice? Gimme a break! In the first place, if Claire-sama was killed, mankind would really perish. The only reason the Demon Queen hadn’t destroyed humanity yet was because Claire-sama existed in the loop. “Since it’s come to this, let’s run away! I will serve you forever.” “Just where to? That telepathic broadcast probably covered the whole world. There’s no place to escape, is there?” After saying that, Claire-sama smiled. I wondered if Claire-sama was demonstrating her self-sacrificing attitude again. However-- “Don’t make that face, Rei.
