※The English version is also below. ※글자수 제한으로 한국어판은 별도 기사입니다. 　※クレア＝フランソワ（一周目）視点のお話です。 「ん……」 　小鳥の声に目を覚ますと、窓から朝日が差し込んでいるのが見えました。 　強すぎる日光を和らげるフィルターつきの窓からは、柔らかな光が降り注いできます。 「ああ、起きましたか、クレア」 「おはようございますわ、零。何をしてるんですの？」 　ダブルベッドの私の横で、レイは裸のままホログラムコンピューターを操作していました。 「これですか？　これは私の趣味です」 「趣味？　見たところ、何かのアニメのようですけれど」 　ホロコンピューターの画面には、ジャパニーズアニメらしきキャラクターが表示されているのが見えました。 「これはゲームですよ」 「ゲーム？」 「ええ、乙女ゲームというものです。まだ人類に娯楽がたくさんあった頃の遺物です」 　零によると、乙女ゲームというのは主に女性を対象にしたノベルゲームだということでした。 　男性の攻略対象が複数おり、プレイヤーはその中から気に入った相手を選んでアプローチしていくのだとか。 「大体分かりましたけれど、あなた男性に興味ありませんわよね？」 「ええ。私の目的はこのゲームの悪役令嬢なんですよ」 「悪役令嬢？」 「ほら、このキャラです」 　零が指さした先には、現実では滅多に見ないような縦ロールの金髪のキャラが腕を組んでいました。 「実際にはあまり多くないんですけれど、乙女ゲームの中にはライバルキャラがいることがあるんです。主人公に突っかかって来て、最終的には負ける当て馬ですね」 「なんて不憫なキャラですの」 　わたくしが同情すると、零はきょとんとした顔をしました。 「……驚きました」 「何がですの？」 「悪役令嬢は嫌われキャラなんですよ。まさか不憫なんて言葉を掛けて貰えるなんて」 「だって不憫じゃないですの。そんな可哀想な運命しかないなんて」 　わたくしがそう言うと、レイは目を輝かせました。 「そう！　そうなんですよ！　いやぁ、初めて話が合いましたね！　そうなんです！　悪役令嬢は可愛いんですよ！」 「ちょっ……ちょっとどうしましたのよ、そのテンション。零ったら別人みたいですわよ？」 　普段のクールな零はどこに言ったのでしょう。 　でも、わたくしはこの零が不思議と嫌いではないと思いました。 「失礼、取り乱しました。とにかく、私はこの悪役令嬢を愛でるのが好きなんです。研究で行き詰まると、よく乙女ゲームを引っ張り出してきて遊ぶんです」 「そう……。で、何か研究で行き詰まりましたの？」 「魔法文明の世界をどのようにデザインするか、についてです。何しろ初めての試みですから、モデルとなる文明のケースも少なくて」 「なるほど、そうでしたのね」 　魔法を備えた文明など、小説の中にしか登場しません。 　フィクションの中には驚くほど緻密な世界設定を作っている作品もありますが、それでも実際の文明デザインの参考に出来るほどのものは多くないでしょう。 「いっそ、このゲームみたいな世界にしちゃいましょうか」 「真面目に考えなさいな。人類の存亡がかかっている計画ですわよ？」 「でも、このゲームは世界設定が本当によく作り込まれていて」 　ああ、なるほど。 　零が会見の時にわざわざ魔法という言葉を使ったのは、恐らくこの趣味の影響なのでしょう。 　こういう人をなんて言うんだったかしら。 　ギーク？ 　日本語ではオタクだったかしら。 「このくらいの世界観で妥協するべきなのかもしれません」 「ダメですわよ、レイ。人類の未来が掛かっているのです。もっと完璧を期さないと」 「それって理想論じゃありませんか？」 「いいこと、レイ。よく理想に逃げ込むなと訳知り顔に言う人がいますが、わたくしは逆だと思いますわ。理想から現実へ逃げ込むことの方が罪だ、と私は思いますの」 　わたくしがそう言うと、レイははっとしたような顔をしました。 「わたくしも精一杯手伝いますから、もう少し頑張りましょう？」 「……分かりました」 　レイは苦笑して頷いてくれた。 「――そういえば、面白い偶然がありますね」 「？」 　わたくしがきょとんとしていると、零はにやりと笑って、 「このゲームの悪役令嬢は、あなたと同じクレアっていうんですよ」 「……ああ、そうですの」 　心の底からどうでもよかった。 「まあ、この話はこれくらいで。朝食を作りますから、クレアはもう少し寝てていいですよ。出来たら呼びに来ます」 「お願いしますわ」 　そういうと、零はわたくしの頬に口づけを一つ落とし、バスローブを着てベッドを離れました。 「ところでクレア。体の調子はどうですか？」 「？　別になんともありませんけれど……。どうしてですの？」 　忙しくて、このところ健康診断はすっぽかしていますが、特に不調を感じたことはありません。 　データの上ではちゃんと受けていることになっているはずですが、レイは改ざんに気付いたのでしょうか？ 「いえ、それならいいんです」 　レイはよく分からないことを言って、そのままキッチンへと向かいました。 　わたくしはそれを見送ってから、二度寝をしようと枕に顔を埋めました。 　零との関係が始まってからもう五年以上が経とうとしています。 　体だけの関係と割り切っていたつもりが、いつの間にか同棲までするようになって。 　最初は酷かったレイからの扱いも、いつの頃からかまるで本物の恋人に対するそれのようになっていました。 　驚いたのは、わたくし自身が同性との性行為に驚くほど順応してしまったことです。 　零の前に恋愛関係にあった相手は全て異性でしたし、わたくしは自分が異性愛者であることを疑いませんでした。 　でも、こうして零との関係が続いていることを鑑みると、わたくしは両性愛者だったのかもしれません。 　まあ、わたくしのセクシュアリティなどどうでもよく、問題は零との関係です。 　不純な動機から始まった関係ですが、わたくしはこの関係に満足してしまっているのです。 　零は恋人には尽くすタイプのようで、性生活以外でもわたくしは大事にされていると感じています。 　今も料理が苦手なわたくしのために、甲斐甲斐しく朝食を作ってくれているわけで。 　零は容姿も可愛いので、わたくしはこの関係になんの不満もないのでした。 　でも――。 「この関係は、研究のためのもの」 　そう。 　零との関係は、飽くまで彼女を計画に引き留めておくための方便なのです。 　ならば、計画が最終段階に入った今、彼女との別れを覚悟しておくべきなのでしょうか。 　わたくしは出来れば零との関係を正式な交際にしたいと考えるようになっています。 　わたくしたちの相性は決して悪くないと思うのです。 　でもそれは、飽くまでわたくしの感想に過ぎません。 　もしも零がまだ嫌々この関係を続けているのだとしたら。 　今のこの甲斐甲斐しい奉仕を一刻も早く終わらせたいと思っているとしたら。 　計画の完遂を、今か今かと待ち望んでいるとしたら。 　わたくしはそれが怖くて、零の今の気持ちを確かめられずにいるのでした。 　気持ちのいい朝のはずなのに、気分が滅入っていきます。 　わたくしは少し体をずらして、零が寝ていた枕に顔を埋めました。 　零の香りがします。 　とても落ち着く香りです。 「クレア、出来ましたよ……って、何してるんですか？」 「！？　な、なんでもありませんわ！」 　朝食の準備が整ったことを伝えに来た零が、わたくしの痴態を笑いました。 　くすくす笑うその顔が憎たらしくて、わたくしは枕を投げつけました。 「ふふ、拗ねないで下さい、クレア。ほら、今朝はクレアの好きなイチゴもありますよ」 「イチゴくらいで誤魔化されないんですからね！」 「じゃあ、いらないですか？」 「……いりますわ」 　イチゴに罪はありません。 　わたくしもバスローブを羽織ると、ベッドを抜け出しました。 　ダイニングで朝食を囲みます。 「明日からまた忙しくなりそうですから、今日の内に羽を伸ばさないといけませんね」 「そうですわね」 「クレアは何かしたいことありますか？　料理以外で」 「りょ、料理だって、いずれは出来るようになりますわよ！」 「くすくす。ええ、期待しています。それはそれとして、何かありませんか？」 　こんなやり取りが、いつしか普通に出来るようになって。 「ねぇ、零」 「はい？」 「あなたは今――」 　幸せですか、とその一言が聞けません。 「何でもないですわ」 「おかしなクレアですね。熱でもあるんじゃないですか？」 　そう言うと、零はおでこをくっつけて来ました。 「も、もう！　バイタルは正常ですわよ！」 「そうですか、それなら良かった」 　安心したように笑うその顔が愛しくて。 　でも、愛してるのたった一言が、今になっても言えないでいるのでした。 *Translation below was made possible with the help of Angela and Jingle. It’s a relic from a time when mankind still had plenty of time for entertainment.” According to Rei, an otome game was a type of novel game that was primarily aimed towards women. There were several male love interests, and the player would freely be able to choose the one they like and pursue them. “I understand the gist of it, but you’re not interested in men, are you?” “That’s right. The person I’m aiming for is the game’s villainess.” “The villainess?” “Look, it’s this character over here.” Rei pointed to a girl with blonde, drill-style hair who had her arms crossed, something you would rarely see in real life. “These types of characters aren’t all that common, but sometimes, there are rival characters in otome games. After all, it’s the first time we’re trying it out, so there weren’t any past civilizations that I could model it off of.” “I see, I suppose that’s true.” Magical civilizations were things that only ever appeared in fiction. Some works of fiction had incredibly detailed world settings, but even so, there weren’t many of them that could actually be used as a reference to design a civilization in real life. “So then I thought, ‘let’s make it similar to this game’s world setting’.” “You should’ve given it more thought. This has to do with preserving the human race, you know?” “But this game has a really well-developed world setting.” Ahh, I see. The reason why Rei went out of her way to use the word “magic” during our press conference was probably because she was influenced by this game. What was the word they used for these types of people? A geek? Or was it otaku in Japanese? “Perhaps we could reach some sort of compromise and turn it into a world just like this.” “That’s no good, Rei. The future of humanity is at stake here.
