※The English version is also below. ※글자수 제한으로 한국어판은 별도 기사입니다. 　※クレア＝フランソワ（一周目）視点のお話です。 「今、零に抜けられるのは困る。何としても引き留めたまえ」 　所長室から研究室への帰り道、わたくしは所長の言葉を反芻していました。 　彼に言われるまでもなく、零の存在はまだまだ研究と計画に必要不可欠なものです。 　確かに永劫回帰ループシステムはわたくし、レーネ、零の三人が中心となって作り上げたものですが、その中心人物は間違いなく零でした。 　既に計画には彼女しか理解出来ない概念がいくつも存在し、彼女なしに計画は立ちゆかなくなっているのです。 　零はもうわたくしたちだけでも大丈夫と言いますが、実際にはそんなことはありえないのでした。 「かといって、どうやったらあの零を説得出来るというの……？」 　零は良くも悪くもマイペースな人物です。 　生半可な説得など聞く耳を持たないでしょう。 　そんなことに頭を悩ませながら、わたくしはふと廊下の外に目を向けました。 　眼下には無数の街明かりが見えます。 　一昔前には百万ドルの夜景などと表現することもあったそうですが、今は違います。 　科学の力に守られていなければ、夜も越せないだけです。 　そんな閉塞感で一杯だった人類に差した一筋の希望――それが零の考えたループシステムでした。 （なんとしても零を引き留めなければ……でも、どうやって？） 　わたくしは思い悩みつつ、研究室の扉を開けました。 「あ、帰ってきた！　ちょっと、クレアさんも引き留めて下さいよ！」 「レーネ？　どうしたんですの？」 「零ちゃんが今日付けで研究所を退所するって言うんです！」 「！？」 　見ると、零は自分のデスクの荷物を無造作に段ボール箱に放り込んでいるではありませんか。 「ちょ、ちょっと待ちなさい、零！　いくらなんでも急すぎますわ！」 「引き継ぎの資料は作ってあります。後はお二人で大丈夫ですよ」 　わたくしの言葉にも、零は手を止める様子もありません。 　わたくしは焦りました。 「零。あなたが考えているほど、この計画は簡単じゃありませんわ。あなたしか理解出来ていないことが多すぎるんですのよ」 「躓きそうなところは、引き継ぎ資料に書いてあります。大丈夫です」 　とりつく島もないとはこのことだ。 「零、どうしてあなたはそんなに辞めたがっていますの？　何か理由が？」 「……別に。仕事が終わったので辞めようと思っただけです」 　わたくしは、何かピンとくるものがありました。 　彼女は何かを隠しているような気がしたのです。 「零、ちょっと来て」 「……クレアさん？」 「いいから！」 　わたくしは、零を談話室に引っ張って行きました。 「座ってちょうだい。今、コーヒーを淹れますわ」 「いらないです。話すことなんてないですから」 「いいから」 　わたくしは零を無理矢理座らせると、コーヒーメーカーのスイッチを入れました。 「考えてみたら、わたくしたち研究に掛かりっきりで、個人的な話をすることがほとんどありませんでしたわね」 「必要ありませんでしたから」 　零は拗ねたように顔をわたくしから背けています。 　話す内容もつれないものです。 「そうかしら？　わたくし、あなたのことがもっと知りたくてよ、零。特にあなたの哲学について」 「別に……そんな大層なものありませんよ」 　わたくしは出来上がったコーヒーを二つ持ち上げると、その片方を零に差し出しながら座りました。 　零も渋々といった様子で受け取ってくれました。 「研究が始まる前、あなたはこう言いましたわよね？　人間に肉体なんて必要なのかって」 「……よく覚えてましたね、そんなこと」 「忘れられませんわよ。ＳＦならともかく、そんなことを本気で言い出す人、初めて見ましたもの」 　わたくしはコーヒーにミルクを入れながら笑いました。 　零はばつが悪そうな顔をしています。 「結局、今回の計画では肉体がアリになりましたね」 「そうですわね。文明開始初期の肉体だけ人工的に用意して、後は自然繁殖に任せることになりましたが」 　零は最後まで強硬に、人類を量子的な存在へシフトすることを主張したのですが、それは合衆国政府の承認が得られなかったのです。 「あなたはどうして肉体をそんなに嫌うんですの？　何か理由があって？」 「……別に」 「それはあなたのセクシュアリティと関係があることですの？」 「！？」 　彼女の顔にははっきりと驚愕の表情が浮かんでいました。 　わたくしは初めて零が動揺するところを見ました。 「ど、どうして……！？」 「これだけ一緒に濃密な時間を過ごせば、流石に分かりますわ。あなた、レズビアンですわよね？」 「……」 　零は答えませんでしたが、その沈黙は何より雄弁に真実を語っていました。 「良かったら話して下さる？　先ほども言いましたけれど、わたくしあなたのことが知りたいんですのよ」 「……つまらない話ですよ」 　零はそう言ったが、ぽつりぽつりと話し始めた。 「私の母国――日本という国は、保守的な国なんです」 「そうなんですの？　わたくしのイメージだと、セクシュアリティにはずいぶん大らかな国だと思っていましたけれど」 「確かに、世論調査なんかをすると、リベラルに近い結果が出るんです。差別はよくない。同性愛者にも人権をって。でも……」 「でも？」 「そういうのって、飽くまで他人ごととか娯楽の中のイメージなんですよ。いざセクシュアルマイノリティが身近にいることが分かったときの反応は、驚くほど保守的です」 　この辺りは、日本人特有の本音と建て前の文化と関係があるかもしれませんね、と零は言った。 「もちろん、全員が全員保守的なわけじゃないです。中にはちゃんと理解してくれる人もいます。でも、面倒なんですよ、いちいち説明して理解して貰ってって」 　それはセクシュアルマイノリティには避けられない苦痛だろう。 「だから私、ずっと思ってるんです。肉体なんてなければいいのにって。そうしたら……人間が心だけの存在になれたら、こんな苦労しなくていいのにって」 　わたくしは零の言いたいことが、血の通った意見として初めて理解出来ました。 　零は何も人類の新たなステージであるとか、進化の果てとか、そういうことを言いたいのではなかったのです。 　単純に、肉体という枷が煩わしくてしょうがなくて、そこから解放されたくて。 　その一心で魂の量子化という分野の研究を続けてきたのでした。 「零……」 「同情とかいらないです。理解すら求めてません。私はただ、こういう風にしか生きられない。ただそれだけの話なので」 　自嘲する零を見るのが、わたくしはとても辛かったです。 　この半年、少なくない時間を共にしてきた相手が、こんな風に笑うのは悲しくて仕方ありませんでした。 　でも――。 「でも、それならどうして計画から外れるなんて言うんですの？　魂の量子化の研究をするなら、ここ以上の環境はないのではなくて？」 　魂の量子化には高性能な演算装置が必要不可欠です。 　タイムはそれにはもってこいの存在のはずでした。 「……」 　それまで喋っていた言葉が唐突に途切れました。 　不自然に目をそらされて、わたくしはおや、と思いました。 「零？」 「……何でもないです。さっきも言った通り、研究が一段落したから辞めたいだけです」 　もういいでしょう、と零は席を立とうとしました。 「それは嘘ですわ。あなたは何かを隠していますわ。そうでしょう？」 「もういいじゃないですか！　私のことなんてほっといて下さいよ！」 　切りつけるような、それでいて悲鳴のような声色で、零が声を荒らげました。 　わたくしはそれでもさらに一歩踏み込みます。 「放ってはおけませんわ。わたくしたちは友だちでしょう？」 　そう言って彼女の肩を掴むと、こちらを向かせました。 　零はせせら笑うような顔をして、 「友だち？　ハッ、何も分かっちゃいないですね、あなたは」 「言ってくれなきゃ分からないですわよ」 「なら言いましょうか。私、あなたに欲情しているんですよ」 「！？」 　今度は逆に、零が私の肩を掴みました。 　その目はどこか危険な、でも自暴自棄な光を帯びているように見えました。 「わたくしに？」 「気付きませんでしたか？　同性しかいないのをいいことに、あなた随分無防備な姿をさらしてましたよね？　誘ってるのかと思いましたよ」 　蓮っ葉な言い方をしながら、零がわたくしを抱き寄せます。 「私に残って欲しいですか？　いいですよ。あなたが私のものになってくれるなら」 「……」 「無理でしょう？　気持ち悪いでしょう？　こんなヤツが側にいたら嫌でしょう？　だから辞めるんです」 　零はへらへらと笑うと、わたくしから手を離しました。 「そういうことです。ご納得頂けましたか？　それじゃあ」 　零は踵を返して立ち去ろうとしました。 　わたくしは――。 「！？」 　その背中を後ろから抱きしめました。 「……クレアさん？」 「いいですわ」 「は？」 「その条件、飲みますと言ってるんですのよ」 　わたくしの言葉に、零は今度こそ信じられないといった顔をしました。 「……正気ですか？」 「至って正気ですわ。そんなことであなたという才能がつなぎ止められるなら、安いものですわ」 「……計画のために、自分を売るんですか」 「いけなくて？　それとも、心までお求めかしら？」 　わたくしが挑発するように言うと、零は一瞬悲しそうな顔をしました。 　でも、すぐに自嘲するような表情で、 「いいえ、体だけで結構です。性格はともかく、あなたの体は楽しめそうですから」 「なら、交渉成立ですわね」 　わたくしは零の顔に自分の顔を近づけました。 「後悔しますよ」 「しませんわ」 「戻るなら今のう――」 「お黙りになって」 　わたくしは零の唇を塞ぎました。 　こうして、わたくしと零のいびつな関係が始まったのです。 *Translation below was made possible with the help of Angela and Jingle. I have to stop her no matter what it takes.” On the way back from the director’s office to the laboratory, I ruminated over the director’s words. Even without him saying anything, she was still absolutely essential for the research and planning. It’s true that I, Lene, and Rei all played the biggest role in creating the eternal loop system, but among us, the most important person was unmistakably Rei. There were already many parts of the projects that only she could understand, so the plan couldn’t proceed without her. Rei reluctantly accepted it. “Before our research started, you said that you wondered if humans need physical bodies, haven’t you?” “... You have a good memory.” “I couldn’t forget that. It was the first time I’d heard it seriously outside SF.” I laughed while pouring milk into my coffee. Rei looked uncomfortable. “In the end, physical bodies became a part of this plan.” “They did. Only the bodies at the beginning of civilization will be artificially prepared, and the rest will be left to natural reproduction.” Rei stubbornly insisted on shifting humanity to quantum beings to the end, but the US government didn’t approve that. “Why do you hate physical bodies so much? If humans only consisted of their hearts, I wouldn’t have to suffer so much.” For the first time, I empathized with Rei’s views. Rei didn’t want humanity to ascend to the next stage or head towards the end of evolution, or anything like that. The shackles of owning a body were bothering her, so she wanted to be released from it. With that in mind, she continued her research in the field of soul quantization. “Rei…” “I don’t need sympathy. I’m not even asking for you to understand. I can only live this way. That’s all.” It was painful for me to see how self-deprecating Rei was. I couldn’t help but feel sad seeing somebody who I’d spent a lot of time in the past six months smile like this. But-- “If that’s the case, why are you removing yourself from this project? There’s no better environment for you if you want to study soul quantization, is there?” A high-performance arithmetic unit is absolutely necessary for soul quantization. TAIM should’ve been perfect for that. “...” The conversation suddenly came to a pause. “Oh?” I thought to myself when Rei unnaturally averted her eyes. “Rei?” “... It’s nothing. As I said earlier, I’m retiring because I completed the research needed from me.” “It’s enough, right?” Rei said and tried to stand up. “That’s a lie. You’re hiding something. Right?” “Isn’t it enough!? Please leave me alone!” Rei raised her voice in an aggressive, yet weak manner. Even so, I continued to press her. “I can’t leave you alone. We’re friends, right?” Saying that, I grabbed her shoulders and turned her to me. Rei was smiling mockingly. “Friends? Haah, you don’t understand anything.” “I won’t understand if you don’t tell me.” “Then let me tell you. I desire you.” “!?” This time, it was Rei’s turn to grab my shoulders. There was something dangerous yet desperate in her eyes. “Me?” “You didn’t notice? Since we were both women, you showed me your defenseless self, didn’t you? I thought you were tempting me.” While saying such vulgar words, Rei embraced me. “You want me to stay here? Very well. You just need to become mine.” “...” “It’s impossible, right? Or what, do you want my heart?” When I spoke provokingly, Rei’s face turned sad for a moment. However, the expression on her face soon turned to self-mockery. “No, just your body is fine.
