※The English version is also below. ※한국어판도 밑에 있어요. 　※クレア＝フランソワ（一周目）視点のお話です。 「進捗はどうかね、クレア」 　その言葉は質問というよりも、結果を知った上での避難の色を帯びていました。 　ここはアメリカ政府が運営する研究施設にある研究所長室です。 　わたくしは呼び出しを受けてここにいます。 　所長室は研究所の他の部屋とは違い、どちらかというと一般企業の社長室のような設えになっています。 　目の前にいるのは、この研究所の所長を務める人物です。 　典型的なアングロサクソンの容姿をしており、年齢は五十代くらい。 　研究者としての実績よりも、経営的な手腕を買われて所長の地位を与えられた人です。 　わたくしはこの人がとても苦手でした。 「……鋭意進行中です。時間はどうしてもかかりますが、わたくしの研究は――」 「言い訳は聞きたくない。結果は出ていない。つまりはそういうことだな？」 　わたくしの言葉をぴしゃりと遮り、所長はわたくしを詰問しようとします。 「人類に残された時間は少ない。悠長に君の研究を待っている暇も金もないんだ」 「……もうしわけございませんわ」 　悔しいけれど、所長の言うことには一理あります。 　人類は今、存亡の危機に立たされているのですから。 「これでも君には期待していたし、時間も金も与えた。だが、これ以上は待てん。期限を切らせて貰う。あと半年だ」 「そんな！　以前から申し上げています通り、わたくしの研究には短期的な視点ではなく長期的な――」 「政府が研究資金を絞り始めた。ヤツら、いよいよ自分たちの身を守ることだけを考え始めている」 「――！」 　それはつまり、大多数の一般人を見殺しに、自分たちだけ逃げようということ。 　あるかどうかも分からない、宇宙の楽園を目指して。 「これは決定だ。半年以内に結果を出せ」 「……かしこまりましたわ」 　わたくしは失意の内に所長室を出ました。 　冷房の効いた廊下が、実際の温度以上に肌寒く感じます。 「どうでしたか、クレアさん？　また所長のお小言ですか？」 　自分の研究室に戻ると、同僚のレーネが軽口を叩いてきました。 　わたくしと同じくらいの年齢の研究者で、ふんわりとした亜麻色の髪の快活な女性です。 　わたくしはそれには取り合わず、所長に見せるはずだったプレゼン資料を机に放ると、自分の椅子にへたり込みました。 「……何かあったんですか？」 　わたくしの様子が流石におかしいことに気がついたのか、同僚が気遣わしげな声を掛けてくれます。 「半年で結果を出さなかったら、クビらしいですわ」 「はあっ！？　そんなの無理に決まってるじゃないですか！？」 　レーネは血相を変えて悲鳴のような声を上げました。 「わたくしもそう言いましたわ。でも、所長は取り合ってはくれませんの」 「はーっ、これだから文系は。あの人たち、研究っていうものがどういうものか全然分かってないですよね。成果が確実に出せる研究なんていう都合の良いもの、あるわけないのに」 　レーネはぶちぶちと不満を並べ始めました。 　彼女は所長の悪口を言いたいのではなく、わたくしに共感を示そうとしてくれているのです。 「ありがとう、レーネ。救われますわ」 「いえいえ。でも、困りましたね。半年ですか……」 「ええ。彼女（・・）をフルに使っても、半年はきっと厳しいですわ」 　わたくしの娘とも言えるそれ。 　わたくしの半生をかけた、研究の集大成。 「あ、丁度いいじゃないですか。これからどう動くべきか、彼女に聞いてみましょうよ。何かしら助言を貰えるかも知れませんし。タイムちゃーん！」 　そう言うと、レーネはわたくしの白衣の袖を引っ張って、研究室の隣にあるラボへの扉を開けました。 「こんにちは、レーネ。どうかしましたか？」 　合成音声とは思えないほど流暢な英語で、彼女――タイムは答えました。 　The Artificiaｌ Inteligence for Mankind――略称タイム（TAIM）は、人類が陥った窮地を解決するべく設計された最新鋭の人工知能です。 　わたくしの研究は彼女を作り上げ、彼女を使って人類を救うことでした。 　二十一世紀の終盤、人類はその存亡が危ぶまれています。 　前世紀から危惧されていた環境問題は結局今になっても解決されず、気温の上昇とともに海水面が上昇し、この百年で海岸線は数キロに渡って陸地を削っていきました。 　夏はクーラースーツなしでは数分と活動出来ないほどに気温が上昇し、冬は逆に氷点下二桁は当たり前の日々が続きます。 　気候変動は農作物を直撃し、深刻な食糧不足が慢性化しています。 　二十一世紀初めにはいずれ百億人に近づくと予測されていた人口は、実際には数をどんどん減らし、今では全世界で十億人を切っている状態です。 　その数億人も科学の恩恵を受け続けなければいつ死滅してもおかしくなく、人類は現実味を帯びた滅亡の二文字に震えながら生活しています。 　環境破壊の責任を押しつけ合って、初めこそいがみ合っていた各国政府ですが、そんなことをしている場合ではないという危機感から、ここ数年は事態打開のために協力関係を結ぶことが進んでいます。 　この研究所もその一環です。 　ですが、進みすぎた環境破壊は既に手の施しようがないほど深刻化し、人類が総力を挙げて挑んでも解決の見通しは全く立っていません。 「クレアもこんにちは。私に何かご用ですか？」 　タイムの機体の前に浮かび上がった女性のホログラムがこちらを見ている。 　彼女がタイムのインターフェイスです。 　銀髪に赤い目をした、少し人間離れした妖精じみた容姿をしています。 「ええ、ちょっと困ったことになりましたの。相談に乗って下さる？」 「喜んで」 　タイムはわたくしが作った人工知能です。 　彼女は分散型コンピューティングを応用して作られた、量子コンピューターの合議制を採用したAIです。 　表面上は単一の人格を有しているように見えますが、内部的には数百からなる異なる特徴を持った個別のAIの集合体です。 　タイムの演算能力――ひいては思考能力は、人間を遙かに凌駕します。 「所長に半年で結果を出せ、と言われましたわ。それについて、あなたの意見を聞かせてちょうだい」 　わたくしの問いに、タイムは少し考える様子を見せてからこう答えました。 「現状のままでは半年以内に結果を出すことは難しいでしょう。私の能力では事態の解決策を見いだすのに、あと数年は見て欲しい所です」 「……ですわよね」 　いくら超高性能のAIとはいえ神ではないのです。 　そうそう都合の良い答えが返ってくるはずもありません。 　わたくしは想像通りの答えに少し落胆するとともに、ある種の諦観を感じていました。 「一つ、提案を申し上げてもいいですか、クレア」 「なんですの？」 「私やクレア、レーネだけでは、半年で結果を出すことは不可能だと推測します」 「そうですわね」 「ですが、ここにもう一人、ある人物を加えた場合、本当に僅かな確率ですが、短期に有益な結果が得られる可能性があります」 「！」 　希望が繋がった……？ 「誰ですの、そのある人物というのは？」 　わたくしは結果が出せるのなら、多少高額な報酬を要求されてもその人物を引き抜くつもりでした。 「日本のある研究者です」 「名前は？」 　わたくしの問いに、タイムはこう答えました。 「大橋零。魂の量子化の専門家です」 　その名前は、やがてわたくしにとって忘れられないものとなるのでした。 *Translation below was made possible with the help of Angela and Jingle. Unlike the other rooms in the research facility, the director’s room looked more like it belonged to the President rather than the head of a company. The person in front of me was the director of the institute. He looked like a typical Anglo-Saxon and about fifty years old. He was the kind of person who was given his position because of his management skills rather than his achievements as a researcher. I was not good at dealing with this person. “...... I understand.” I left the director’s office filled with despair. The air-conditioned corridor suddenly felt chillier than it actually was. “What’s wrong, Claire-san? Did you get scolded by the director again?” When I returned to my laboratory, my colleague, Lene, made some small talk with me. She was a researcher that was about the same as me. She was a cheerful woman with beige colored hair. Without answering, I took the presentation I was going to present to the director, tossed it aside, and slumped into my chair. “...... What happened?” As expected, a colleague called out to me when they noticed something wrong with me. “They said if I don’t produce any results in the next six months, I’ll be fired.” “Huh!? During the summer, the temperature would rise to the point where it was impossible to go a few minutes without wearing a cooling suit, and in the winter, temperatures would drop anywhere below the two-digit range. Climate change ended up affecting crops, and severe food shortages became a chronic issue. The population, which was predicted to reach 10 billion people at the beginning of the 21st century, had actually shrunk to less than one billion people worldwide. Those hundreds of millions of people could die at any time if we stopped reaping the benefits of science. All of humanity was literally riding on that one word. Governments that were initially fighting over who was responsible for causing the destruction of our planet had soon realized that this was no time to argue over such things, so over the past few years, they had begun cooperating with each other in an attempt to break the deadlock. The Artificial Intelligence for Mankind—— 약칭 TAIM은 인류가 몰린 궁지를 해결하기 위해 설계된 최신형 인공지능입니다. 제 연구는 그녀를 완성시켜서, 인공지능으로 인류를 구원하는 겁니다. 21세기 종반, 인류는 존망의 위기에 봉착했습니다. 한 세기 전부터 염려의 대상이었던 환경문제는 결국 지금 와서도 해결되지 못했습니다. 온난화와 함께 해수면이 상승했고, 근 백년에 걸쳐 해안선은 수킬로미터에 걸쳐 육지를 집어삼켰습니다. 여름은 쿨러슈트 없이는 몇 분조차 활동할 수 없을 정도로 기온이 올랐고, 겨울엔 거꾸로 영하 두 자릿수의 추위가 당연한 듯이 이어졌습니다. 기후변동은 농작물에 직격타를 가했고, 심각한 식량 부족이 만성화 됐습니다. 21세기 초만 해도, 언젠가 100억에 가까워질 거라고 예상했던 인구가 실제로는 점차 수가 줄어가면서 이젠 전 세계 인구가 10억도 아슬아슬한 상황입니다. 남아 있는 몇 억 명도 과학의 은혜가 이어지지 못한다면 언제 죽어도 이상하지 않기 때문에, 인류는 지금 현실 그대로 멸망이라는 두 글자에 몸을 떨며 생활하고 있습니다. 각국 정부는 환경 파괴의 책임을 서로에게 떠넘기면서 처음에는 오로지 다투기만 했지만, 지금 이러고 있을 때가 아니라는 위기의식 덕분에 최근 몇 년간은 사태해결을 위한 협력 관계를 맺는데 성공했습니다. 이 연구소도 그 일환입니다. 하지만 너무나도 심각해진 환경파괴는 이미 손쓸 도리가 없을 정도로 심각해졌고, 인류가 총력을 기울여서 매달려 봐도 해결할 전망이 보이지 않았습니다. “클레어도 안녕하세요. 저에게 볼일이 있으신가요?” 타임의 기체 앞에 떠있는 여성형 홀로그램이 제 쪽을 바라보고 있습니다. 그녀가 타임의 인터페이스입니다. 은발에 붉은 눈동자를 한, 인간을 초월한 요정과도 같은 모습을 한 소녀입니다. “네, 조금 곤란한 일이 생겼어요. 상담해 줄 수 있나요?” “물론이죠.” 타임은 제가 만든 인공지능입니다. 그녀는 분산 컴퓨팅을 응용해서 만들어졌고, 양자 컴퓨터 합의제를 채택한 AI입니다. 겉보기에는 단일 인격을 가지고 있는 것처럼 보이겠지만, 내부적으론 수백 개에 달하는 각각 다른 특징을 가진 개별 AI의 집합체입니다. 타임의 연산능력—— 더 나아가 사고능력은 인간을 아득히 능가합니다. “소장한테서 반년 안에 결과물을 내놓으라는 말을 들었어요. 거기에 대해 당신의 의견을 들려주세요.” 제 질문에 타임은 잠깐 생각하는 기색을 보인 후에 대답했습니다. “지금 상태로는 반년 이내에 결과를 내는 건 어렵겠죠. 제 능력으로 해결책을 찾아내기까지 앞으로 몇 년은 더 기다려줬으면 해요.” “……역시 그렇죠.” 아무리 초고성능 AI라고는 해도 신은 아닙니다. 자기가 바란다고 좋은 해결책이 떡하니 나타날 리가 없습니다. 저는 예상했던 대답에 살짝 낙담함과 동시에 이젠 달관마저 느꼈습니다. “한가지, 제안 드려도 될까요, 클레어.” “뭔가요?” “저와 클레어, 레네만으로는 반년 안에 결과를 내놓는 건 불가능하다고 예상합니다.” “그렇죠.” “하지만 여기서 한 사람 더, 어떤 인물을 더했을 경우엔 정말로 희박한 확률이지만 단기간 안에 유의미한 결과를 얻어낼 가능성이 있습니다.” “!” 아직 희망이 있다……? “누군가요, 그 인물이라는 건?” 저는 결과를 내놓을 수만 있다면 상당히 고액의 보수를 청구 받더라도 어떻게든 그 인물을 빼내 올 생각이었습니다. “일본에 있는 연구원입니다.” “이름은?” 제 질문에 타임은 이렇게 대답했습니다. “오오하시 레이. 영혼의 양자화의 전문가입니다.” 그 이름은 이윽고, 저에게 있어서 결코 잊을 수 없는 이름이 되었습니다.
