ミリタリー・クラシックス77号が本日発売となりました。

今回のすずきあきら先生による『WW1兵器名鑑』はフォッカー・アインデッカーです。名前は「フォッカー社の単葉機」という意味です。

Military Classics Issue 77 is out today.

This issue's 'WW1 Weapons Directory' by Akira Suzuki is the Fokker Eindecker. The name means 'Fokker monoplane'.

このフォッカー・アインデッカーの特徴はプロペラ同調装置を搭載した初の戦闘機、という点です。

The feature of this Fokker Eindecker is that it is the first fighter equipped with a propeller Synchronization gear.

飛行機で射撃を行う場合、パイロットの目の前に機関銃が据えてあると狙いやすそう、ということは想像しやすいと思います。

When shooting by plane, it's easy to imagine that a machine gun in front of the pilot would make it easier to aim.

ところが、なんの工夫もなしに機首に機関銃を設置するとプロペラが穴だらけになってしまいます。当時は木製のプロペラが多かったので、機関銃弾は容易に貫通してしまいます。

However, if you install a machine gun on the nose without any ingenuity, the propeller will be full of holes. At that time, there were many wooden propellers, so machine ammunition could easily penetrate.

プロペラ同調装置のアイデア自体はフォッカー・アインデッカーの前からありました。しかし、プロペラの回転と機関銃の射撃をシンクロさせることは難しく、プロペラに防護板や鉄棒を貼り付けたりしてなんとかプロペラを守る工夫が凝らされました。しかし、これではプロペラの推進力を損なってしまうのは明らかです。

The idea of the propeller synchronization device itself was before Fokker Eindecker. However, it was difficult to synchronize the rotation of the propeller with the shooting of the machine gun, and somehow the propeller was protected by attaching a protective plate or horizontal bar to the propeller. However, it is clear that this will undermine the propeller's propulsion.

プロペラの旋回半径の外に機関銃を設置する飛行機もありましたが、ちょっと狙いにくそうです。

There was an airplane that installed a machine gun outside the turning radius of the propeller, but it seems a little difficult to aim.

そこに登場したのがドイツ帝国のフォッカー・アインデッカーでした。

今回のWW1兵器名鑑は、そんなお話です。

ところでパイロットの正面に機関銃を配置する場合、こんな解決策もありました。

推進式の飛行機です。しかし、これも別のデメリットが存在してあまり普及はしませんでした。
