Axe Massacre - Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians
Australian Costumers Guild Ball 2015

Definitely one of my favourite images just through how it all came together. I'd been invited to come along and shoot at the annual Australian Costumers Guild Ball. I had even redesigned their logo and poster to try and help get a better turnout.

I turned up to the Estonia Hall looking for a place to set and originally had started down on the floor. After a while I had a look up on stage behind the curtain and found a wondrous setting.

Ash was there in her Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians made out of garbage bags and I too this beautiful shot of her below but it was missing something.

Being from 101 Dalmatians it needed a Dalmatians. So I started a google search and found the one below which jumped out at me right away because the shading on it was great to match the light in my show but I could have asked for a better pose as it looks like the dog is turned away from her but looking up with concern. Luckily the artist had tagged across the image with their name. So after googling Aiyana-Kopa I found out it was an Australian artist on DeviantArt.

I had made a mock-up of the design and sent it to them saying that with their permission I wanted to use the illustration like so. I wasnt expecting the response I got.

"Thank you for asking, I'm so glad you've taken an interest in my work. I love your photo, and would be happy to let you incorporate my picture into it (so long as its credited ^^). However, since that particular artwork is quite old now, I'd be happy to draw you a new one to use instead, better quality and closer to the original movie style (or even more realistic, if you'd prefer) if that's okay?"

"So I've done some sketches of what I had in mind for the new image, both in the same pose as the original you chose, but one in a (more accurate) Disney style and the other in a more semi-realistic style."

I did want to keep the design in the Disney Style. And the final version she came up with to match the style and colours of the image is below.

I added a drop shadow to better incorporate and ground the dog into the scene. All in all I love the final image and I was so thankful that Aiyana-Kopa. I have a couple more I would like to do in a similar fashion one day.
