We filmed this on a terrible day of K-pop press releases, so we needed to return to comfort watching, so let's watch a BL actor and his fan go on a date to Jeju-do PRESENTED BY UNION PAY!

At the end of the day only Knetizens and the Koreans general public opinions matter to kpop companies. The target audience for new groups are middle school/high school who want the fantasy boyfriend experience from their idols. They will never allow a new idol with a "scandal". Koreans think jay park is hot and don't care about his racism/cultural appropriation.

sm - and every other company for that matter - wants to pander to the western audience and take the bits that suit them but refuses to change in any other aspects (like attitudes on dating and "scandals"). I don't know if sm doesn't care or if they don't realize how this makes international audiences feel and how it puts them off the group in general. someone get me in that damn building and get these idols a union!

If you're looking into reading more BL, I'd suggest reading 10 Dance. It centres around two characters who are the top of their division in the ballroom dancing scene. My favourite I've ever read (and still reading since it isn't done). Although its yaoi, its story isn't utilizing the typical tropes of the genre. So the main characters aren't coded as one being meek and submissive while the other is strong and dominate. And the art is *chef's kiss* I warn you, you'll go into a downward spiral of looking for any ballroom contact LOL

Sorry to be pedantic, but the western attitude towards "yaoi typical tropes" is super outdated, and JP geicomi and BL artists have spoken out about it at length because BL and geicomi are wide umbrellas featuring stories with different genres, tones, and whatnot, and shouldn't be talked down about. In fact, 10 Dance's own artist proudly calls herself a BL artist, and has done work that is "typical" as well as atypical!

as someone who is fairly new to kpop but has done my time in the jpop and vkei mines: down with the "pure" idol rules, let them date and drink and smoke and say fuck! Gachikoism is a DISEASE and honestly I'm upset that it had to get to the point in Japan where a huge massive abuse issue exploded out of control before anyone in power decided "hey maybe we should try regulating these entertainment companies a lil'. Aside from that, love ur commentary as always, and I can't believe how Zhang Hao and Jiwoong just got away with the siliest credit card commercial of all time
