Not sure how comfortable Matthew’s parents are speaking English, but it warms my heart knowing they can probably communicate deeper, more complicated, more nuanced feelings and thoughts better with him now that Matthew’s Korean seems a lot more fluent than when he was growing up, and Matthew probably understands the Korean culture much better now, too. Immigrant parents and their children don’t necessarily get to communicate on a deep level (although of course it depends on the family and the individual). So many people I know had only minimal conversations with their parents. Matthew and his dad may have always had deep conversations, so maybe I’m just projecting, but it was really nice hearing him say that.
