why is some of these images webp and some jpg :( is it the way they are posted or something, surely they should be jpg

I'm not sure if it's a server thing that changes it on upload, or something else, but webp is basically an image file created by Google that provides better resolution on images than jpg and considerably smaller file sizes. It's a simple matter to change it by opening in a graphics app and re-saving as jpg if you want. Some, as long as there is no transparency, can just be renamed as jpg in a file app.
