I went back and searched through my older works and found out that the 80's hacker's room and witch's lair are among the most popular things I have done. They have a very similar style and stylization and it kind of ends there, so I wanted to continue the series. So what is the common denominator here and what should be next?

Both were rooms, but I made a lot of different rooms in different styles. These two were special in some way though. Then it struck me, they're both kind of lairs! Hidden from the world and a little bit sinister. So another one might as well be a lair of mad scientist working on a doomsday device, right? :)

If you have more ideas about some other sinister lairs, please reply and let me know :)

I started the Pinterest search for reference and if you look at the whole board, you can see they are all over the place. Sometimes it's hard to keep focus on some particular style and these were all kinds of sci-fi lab ideas from steampunk-ish Frankenstein labs all the way to fantasy alchemy labs.

So I had to pick the ones, that are still a bit retro-futuristic, but in line with the high tech super villain lab style. I had to include the plasma orb in some way. I always wanted to have one and this Xmas received one from a friend.

Funny how the brain works. Did I only include the plasma orb because of the gift, or the whole idea came to me because of it? :)

I loved the reference ideas, like the orb, gas tank, lot of gadgets and old fashioned computers with CRT screens. But where to put it all?

I have to admit, I took a heavy inspiration from the witch's lair and placed the door, table and gadgets in the same places. Only instead of cauldron, there was now a plasma orb and since I wasn't going to do stairs here, the gas tank fit nicely in the right corner.

Sometimes, if you have already done a layout, that worked well and you find yourself in similar situation, don't shy away from reusing your old ideas. I wouldn't make a rule out of it, rather an exception, that can help you arrange your ideas a little bit better without reinventing your own wheel.

So that's it for the evil scientist's lair and I really hope it can help you in your next work.

See you in the next one! :)
