Well, it's probably not hard to guess, why I wanted to do this kind of illustration right now :) But even with Halloween, the possibilities are endless! Last year, I went for a Jack Skellington's house from the Nightmare Before Christmas stop-motion animated movie.

It was a blast, but I had this itch in the back of my head to do a more classic horror haunted house. At first, I thought I will go for Adams' house, but then I realized, that I really want to do something from scratch this time.

Good news everyone! I have now linked the mood board to the respective Pinboard I used to research the materials. For some time, I struggled with a fact, that I don't really link to the original images and I wanted to credit the artists somehow. It would be tedious to do this image by image, so from now on, you will find a Pinboard for each artwork. And there are always some more images to explore, than on the final mood board.

After some search I found the doll house model and I loved the architecture so much, that I decided to remake it as is. I just made some small adjustments and got inspired by windows from the Adams' house. I've included some more spooky images for color reference and atmosphere. I really loved the flat cartoon illustration on the right and decided to do similar colors with that beautiful green and purple contrast.

Architecture sketches always take me a bit longer, due to a more strict geometrical requirements so it's a bit rough on the edges. But again, as I said many times, the purpose of these is to layout all the objects and figure out proportions and here it was especially important to see, what fits into the small diorama space.

I've had to let go of some of the mood board ideas and others I had to compress a bit, like the small fence and lamp cheat :) In the end, it's a bit more crowded, but what haunted house would it be without a spooky tree and a little graveyard on the side, right?

Let's now get a closer look on some of the modeling and lighting choices I made directly in Blender.

That wraps the insights for the Haunted House illustration this week. Thanks for reading and I hope I will see some of your spooky work too!
