"Blue Angel of the Sea"

I had a much harder time with this sketch than I anticipated... ^^; So Courtney wanted to see how I would anthropomorphise a blue dragon sea slug. These gorgeous looking little creatures look like they are from a fantasy story, so I got really excited to draw them :) At first I approached the whole design like they were aliens, but even like this it was hard to come up with something that wouldn't be just a mess. Then I had to make the head... Boy, no matter how close or high res picture I looked at, I just couldn't make out how their heads are built. So after much struggle, I decided to draw it as I would with slugs or snails. And this is the final design. I didn't know this will be such a huge undertaking (I spent quite some time with it, really), but at the end, I hope I could make this little creature look cool :)

Remember, Blue Dragons are the most poisonous sea slugs and have stinging cells that they get from the man o war that they eat. So don't think about anything naughty. You life depends on it.

Unless you're one of the several species resistant to the toxin, or coated with slime that keeps the nematocysts from firing. Surprisingly few of those adaptations are found on predators of the man-o-war, most of them just use the tentacles for shelter (which is rare in the open ocean). Each of these floating siphonophores is a whole weird-ass ecosystem. Fascinating stuff, and it almost tempted me to look into a marine biology degree (in a land-locked country :P) back in the day.
