I was planning to do a simple and basic drawing with the sketch I showed yesterday, but I ended up spending about 1h 30m with it!

People often tell me that I'm fast drawing, but since I do not have anything to compare with, I do not know ^^". What I do know is that the first digital drawings I did cost me several hours. This means, the practice (I draw everyday) has helped me to be more swift. Other tips to be faster could be:

  • Sketching everyday using references. Although you don't have the time to draw digitally, you can take a few minutes to fill a page of your sketchbook. Draw anything, but using references. In this way you will internalize the shapes, and when you have to draw in digital, you can do without the references.
  • Use the options "Clipping Group" and "Preserve Opacity". Seriously, I was not aware of all the time I had lost until I discovered these two tools.
  • Create a wide color palette, with the colors you usually use, open it in each drawing. Recover colors with the dropper is complicated, and more if there are different layers on top.
  • Use Filters, like Hue and Saturation in order to test which colors look better. So, you will not have to go coloring again.

Also, I wanted to show you this. I've just noticed that I did a similar drawing in june of 2018 (it was a fanart of Boku no Hero Academia), and I can't help thinking about mistakes. The kid looks so stiff maybe? And the proportions are not very well done, not to say that the right hand of the older boy does not make sense...

It was one of the first tests I did of light, and I still had not found my own style.

I know that I still have many mistakes, that I have much to improve, but I recommend when you feel insecure, just see a drawing from a year ago to be aware of how much you have  improved.

I never thought about using clipping groups. This makes everything so much easier, thank you so much >

I wish I had known it when I started with digital! I'm so happy it helped! :D
