Nice debut Q&A, looking forward to more of these.

I'll miss the experience of buying old games and seeing what's left behind on the save file, if it's still there- mostly with DS games, since older games tend to have more fragile save methods like save batteries that have stopped working, and newer games tend to save to the console. I bought a copy of Pokemon HeartGold for a decent price at the start of 2020 from a guy who was unfortunately heavily financially impacted by the pandemic and wasn't really ready to give up his games. I honestly felt really bad for the guy, and ensured him that I would take good care of it. I checked the save later out of curiosity and it was honestly very clear to me whoever previously played the game (not sure if it was the same person who sold it to me) had a blast with it, they had all kinds of cool Pokemon on there, even some event stuff(!). It was honestly a weirdly interesting insight into a person that I will probably never meet again (or ever, if it wasn't the same person that sold it to me). I made a backup of their save (I did my first playthrough on an emulator after dumping the ROM) so I might bring some of their Pokemon forward to the latest game sometime when I'm feeling sentimental. I hope the guy I bought it from is doing better nowadays, in any case.

I didn't even think about the fact that we don't get that "last person's save" experience with new games anymore. Did the 3DS save on the cartridges?

The 3DS generally did save to cartridges (except for StreetPass/SpotPass stuff which was always on SD), but for most that experience was less frequent with that console with digital games being more of a thing, and there were a few oddball games like Fantasy Life that only saved to SD for some reason. For me, that was also around the time I started learning about upcoming games and buying them more frequently over buying stuff preowned— the first game I ever preordered was Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (and now I feel old because that game is turning 10 this year… wild). But yeah, it's been a while since I've bought preowned DS games, haha
