The issue I get to with HxH and I’ve heard this before, the internal dialogue of each character ceases to become that character. Instead they just become the author (Togashi) speaking as he would think and react to them. The perfect example here is Youpi, who as you said this kind of thought pattern isn’t expected from his character as shown so far. It just changes into the super smart analytic mind that Togashi would be thinking of when writing these powers. It’s almost like he imagines the powers, then comes up with a solution to beat them but can’t help explaining each side completely until he fills 2 pages of manga with text! 😜 In this case it just becomes internal monologue that is great but doesn’t fit the characters 😂

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I enjoy the "technical writing" aspect of HxH a ton. It's awesome to know exactly what the characters are thinking, how their thought process is changing in response to what is happening, and how that effects what actions they take in response. Most authors take the route of leaving all of this kind of stuff up to the reader's interpretation, or just facial expressions alone. Show, don't tell and all that. But what Togashi is doing is really refreshing. There's very little confusion about what the characters are doing or why, and it doesn't let the reader self-insert into the characters and do "fix-it-fiction" saying stuff like "oh, that was a stupid decision, they should've just done this in that situation and everything would've been resolved way better..." (I see this happening in the One Piece fandom a lot) Like no! the character does not have the same information as you, and they have a totally separate reasoning, thought process, and world view than you as a reader. In this situation, the character's mental and emotional state, and their goal at the time all logically dictate that they would do this, even if it's not necessarily the best course of action according to you. It almost forcibly makes the reader see things from a different perspective than their own.

I think it's supposed to show just how fast Youpi's thought process is growing and changing in response his own emotional state and him discovering new powers and learning more about what Nen can do from his opponents. Up until this point, Youpi hasn't needed to think about much of anything, and he hasn't been under a lot of stress causing him to think really fast and adapt how he fights. I can see how it looks like his sudden growth doesn't fit the character, but I think it does in a way.

It’s truly the best power system in a show with fighting, ever
