WOOOOO!

Gus N

Definitely a valid point about the fake out deaths, some of them I can reason through and be okay with, but with Pell and Pagaya especially, it definitely feels like it cheapens the impact.

YESS finally, i loved how surprised you were by coby being there!! :DD and also, yeah, luffys family is kind of crazy huh lmao..do you remember, how between the davy back fight and water 7, they first met aokiji and he told luffy "i owe your grandpa one" and you were all confused...so here it is! :D

Things to remember are the Yonko (four emperors) as it's suuuuuuper important later on. Also the new world which he briefly mentioned.

Luis CK

Not an absolute but get to used to fakeout deaths. Sad but true /:. Figured I comment because I think is worse to let yourself go and be disappointed later than just expect it. Edit: The Elbaf thing, man. Wow.

Luis CK

I do have one for you. The guys that messed with Zoro this video were the ones the shipwrights thought were CP9 instead of Lucci, Kalifa and Kaku, lol. (Remember the gag when they said they wouldn't be surprised because they had a rough idea of who betrayed Water 7).

Luis CK

Also, Luffy's Grandpa was mentioned with Aokiji, remember. It was one of the reasons he let Luffy live :o

Something to take notice of, the English translation uses "friend" for two different Japanese words. When Luffy says Coby is his friend, he uses "tomodachi" which is closer to what most English speakers think when we say friends. But when talking about his crewmates, Luffy uses the word "nakama" which implies a deeper meaning like friend, crewmate, comrade, people united in purpose and desires. Tomodachi is someone you'd help move into their new apartment, Nakama is someone you'd move to a different country with to start a business together. Luffy is friendly toward Coby, but he'd die for any one of his nakama

COMPLETEYL agree about the "fakeout deaths" its an unavoidable problem with OP because after each arc is a banquette/party and it would be hard to have one with a death (according to the writer).

hurryupmode

So far to this point in the story, the pattern is that deaths during flashbacks are real. Kuina, Bellemere, Dr. Hiruluk, Tom, literally every Oharan except for Robin.

TheJoestarWithTheStrawHat

Love the genuine reaction. Yes Aokiji mentioned that he reminded him of his grandfather that usually goes over people head lol. No more bottle water for me 😭 jk I dont buy water

Seraphem

Better way to put it Tomodachi help you move furniture, Nakama help you move bodies.

The Death things is just how Oda rolls.... ans yet he will never fail to make you feel torn up when he wants to, your emotions are his to twists as he wishes. And I'd much rather a writer like Oda then some George R.R. Martin type that just kills off characters to the point there's no real point in caring about any of them cause no matter what they are going to suffer and/or die horribly.

BoomShtick

That's fair, but I also don't want my first assumption in these moments to be, "well, I don't have to get overly emotional, because they're probably still alive."

I've been following this series for almost 15 years. After 1,000+ chapters/episodes this series becomes a part of your life because there are no real breaks or seasons. If you do the math it comes out to 45ish episodes/chapters a year and so many people have become so connected to the crew, that if one of them die, it would have the same impact as losing a friend or loved one for some people. This series was supposed to be finished by 2002. Then it became 2010. Now it's supposed to be 2025.
