With how methodical Oda sets things up changes in former arcs matter later. In the manga version of Long Ring Long Island he establishes that Luffy will always choose members of his crew first. So Usopp's argument that Luffy will get rid of weaker members is way less grounded than in the anime where Luffy got the horse as a price (instead of Chopper) and agrees to a second match putting his crew in more danger.

"Never make a promise when you're happy" Good one. I wish my drunk self would remember it. This guy has a tendency to get me into trouble.

Man the scene with merry "crying" breaks me

This is the first time in the series where Oda really tries to hurt you, the reader/viewer. This is the Straw Hats at their absolute lowest, being pushed to the limits of their resolve not by an outside enemy, but by the tensions and resentments within the crew itself. This arc is where they have to discover if this is a group of friends sailing around for fun, or if they are a real pirate crew ready to strive for the top of the world. This saga is a wild ride, and I guarantee you will cry before the end. Buckle in and enjoy!

Interesting tidbit, they explained in Long Ring that the water level lowers once a year so that the whole island gets exposed. This is when they cross from one part of the island to the other. The water level lowering there is from the Aqua Laguna which ends up hitting Water 7.

The fight is one of my fav in all of one piece just because it was so different (seen at least 5 times still cried) I like your quote Franky design Ace venture come to mind? P.s the guy that gave them the boat name was Merry

And Oda plays the opening overture of the symphony of emotions he will be conducting throughout this arc.

I know! And I love that this is never actually addressed, it's just part of the worldbuilding that exists and is yet one more small detail that really shows what an S Tier world builder Oda is!

Usopp has increasingly felt his weakness as a Strawhat especially when compared to the abilities of the Monster Trio and even Chopper. His own insecurities about his (percieved) lack of value to the crew, and the analogous comparison to the Merry which can no longer keep up with the demands of the journey is all knotted and tied up together in his lack of self-worth and negative self-image. He sees the Merry as an extension of himself, and if Luffy is able to cast the Merry aside, he feels that he too will eventually become a burden that will need to be cast aside further down the line. It's ironic that Usopp has a negative self-image, because look how well he did against friggin LUFFY with just 3 hours of prep time! It was legit a Batman vs. Superman thing.

- I often skip the Usopp fight episodes when rewatching because I don't need to tear up again. :/ It's a little better when the reaction angst is shared. - The name of Kaya's servant who designed and named the Going Merry is... Merry. (He wasn't all that humble, was he?) Remember, his hair looked like sheep wool and he had little ram horns, too, thus the Going Merry masthead design. - Frrrranky!!! And yes, he's totally a Chad. Though with that name you'd miss out on Franky rolling his R's when he announces himself. Side note: I'm so glad his voice actor can do a hard R sound; it would've been awkward if he sounded like he was saying "Flanky" all the time. - As has probably been mentioned before, Oda designed Franky with his voice actor (Kazuki Yao) in mind, so you could say that he was designed for the anime, even though he's a manga canon character. Kazuki previously voiced Jango and Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, both weird characters, and Franky is just as weird. :P - As a heads up, you definitely want to end a reaction set on episode 243, so the current pace of 3 episodes per set should work out, with 238-240 and 241-243.

Franky's hair design is partly based on Ace Ventura, and his forearms are from Popeye.

Mithril Lace

Okay but are we just gonna overlook the part where the water made it seem like Merry was crying during Luffy and Usopp's fight? Because I am not OK

BoomShtick

Popeye was the first thing I thought of. Didn't even connect the Ace Ventura hair

Catching up to the videos, and yeah... This arc is interesting to watch as far as first time reactors go since everyone thinks "Oh, it's a simple arc of find another crewmate whose a shipwright and fix the Merry." Then we lose Robin. Then we lose the money. Then Usopp gets beaten to hell. Then we're told the Merry can't be fixed. Then Usopp leaves the crew. And everything else that follows. Pretty much every reactor by Luffy v Usopp fight says "Wtf is going on in this arc!?"

Nanach

Could you really imagine Luffy and Zoro saying " come here, Usopp, lets hug it out"?

Usopp Vs. Dark Souls boss 50th time vibes here, almost this time, almost....
