TL;DR: Khemia is temporarily on hold. A new VN, Adastra: Cities (working title), will be released later this month.

Most of you have probably noticed the shaky development of Khemia thus far. There are a few reasons for this. Physical health issues and prescription drug-induced mental health issues back in the summer took a bit of a toll on me. Ever since then I've had trouble with Khemia's direction. Initially I thought I simply had a severe form of writer's block, or that what I went through in the summer left me somehow incapable of writing, but while working on Arches, the sequel to Echo, I've found myself able to churn out a solid amount of work whenever I sit down to write. This made me realize that Khemia's issues might have more to do with the project itself. So, I decided that it needs more time in development, and more time for me to decide exactly what it actually is. This might sound odd, but while I thought I knew what Khemia was going to be about, I realized that it's not actually the story I want to tell. I think I also just need a break from agonizing over it month after month.

Because of this, I'm sad to say that Khemia is going into hiatus. I can't say for exactly how long (I'm hoping no longer than the summer), but work is going to continue on assets, and I will continue to develop the story into something that I feel is worth telling. In the meantime, I will also begin releasing updates for Arches next month.

Despite this bad news, or I suppose because of it, I'm able to move forward on a story I have been wanting to tell, and it will keep Adastra-related content part of regular updates. It's a companion VN to Adastra, currently under the working title Adastra: Cities.

Cities will center around the player character's tour of the moon with Amicus, the events of which took place off-screen near the end of Adastra. This is something I've considered doing for a while as I've tended to agree with the audience's concern that Amicus and his human didn't have enough time to really spend together amidst the fast-paced nature of the story. I also feel that there was a lot more to say about the culture and history of Adastra that wasn't explored in the original VN. There will certainly still be an overarching narrative involving some tension and conflict, but I think many of you will enjoy seeing these characters in situations in which there is room to breathe and relax, though not completely (especially with Alex and Cassius along for the ride).

Many of the assets are already complete considering most of the sprites from Adastra will be used, but Haps is excited to work on all the new illustrations and even characters that will be involved. I know that this isn't very much info to go off of, but we're planning to post the official title, assets, and even the first build by the end of this month.

Apologies to everyone who was enjoying Khemia, but I feel this is the right move while the VN is still at the very beginning. I'm hoping I can make it something that's even more enjoyable when builds resume a regular release schedule. I will keep you posted on when exactly that might be.

Thank you for everyone's patience these past several months.

Doing the work that you enjoy will always end up producing the best final product. Plus, I can’t complain about seeing more of Amicus and his human, as well as learning more about the moon.

The Raven King

Im a bit sad to see khemia be put on hiatus, but i'd much rather you be in good health than my enjoyment. You've got my hopes high for this new vn and i'll support you all the way

I’m so looking forward to this. I do hope you might continue on with the humans story on earth though. I personally would love to see how the human convince the world that aliens exist and that we are on the verge of joining their empire.

You’re doing great work and if you believe Khemia needs a hiatus right now that is completely understandable. I am really excited for Adastra: Cities and many of the other things you release. Please take your time on everything especially your health. I wish you to get well soon.

Hey, anything you write is gonna be fantastic lmao! Best of luck with everything, thanks for the update! Can't wait to check everything out whenever it's ready! Thanks for all of your hard work!

Creativity happens in different ways and can be difficult to predict. I'm glad you're recognizing that in this case it can't be forced and doing what you need to do! I was enjoying the potential khemia had but equally as interested in reading more about amicus and the human! Excited to see more

Rustle Tasmania

Howly you have done nothing but amazing work on all the VN's you've written. I can understand that things can get the better of you like your health and everything but so long as you yourself are alright that's all that matters. There's no need to rush you know we're all here to support you so I'm glad you're doing okay though. I am excited for what's to come though with what else you have planned too but most importantly I'm glad you're doing okay 😊😊

I'm enjoying Khemia, but I'm happy to know that you're willing to put it on hold so you can make it the best it can be! That being said, the Cities has me absolutely hyped! Even if it's not all that story driven or anything, I'm legitimately excited for it. If anything, I'm just glad to spend more time with Amicus. You're one if the best VN authors I've ever read. No matter how long it takes you always deliver quality.

I'm sure decisions like these aren't easy to make, but please know you and the entire team have my full support in this! Excited to see what's up with Cities *and* to hear that you're taking steps to keep yourself healthy!

Your health comes first Howly. Khemia will be fine and ready to go when you're ready. Looking forward to Adastra: Cities

while i am sad to see it go on hiatus, i hope the break will help you come back to the project fresh when you are ready and that there arent many troubles with it after, personal health is more important

Don't worry I waited this long and I don't mind. Your health either physically or mentally come first and glad you are taking steps to get better. Can't wait for adastra cities though and hope you get better and know more of the direction you wanna take this. TAKE CARE💙

Honestly, this is good news. I know what it's like to try and be write for a particular project when your heart just isn't in it. I'm willing to wait as long as you need to make Khemia into something that you're happy with. In the mean time, I look forward to Arches, and especially Adastra: Cities. The one thing I definitely needed after the ending of Adastra was more content of Amicus and the human (I named him Sean) just spending time together and going on adventures with slightly lower stakes. We love you Howly, do your best.

Well, I'm shaken, I wanna be happy, but the attached bad news is hard to swallow. Very awesome to see that we get more time with our wolf, I always wanted to see that tour, so you can bet that excites me. As for the bad news, well it's hard to hear, definitely don't fret over slow progress first and foremost. No ifs or buts about that, focus on staying well. Get yourselves on the right track, both physically and mentally, take time when you need it because everything else will fall into place if you do. And it will feel good by you and us 🤗😊🤗

I'm glad you figured these things out and are doing what will work best for you! Also honestly pretty happy that writing Arches is going well, I'm really looking forward to that one. I was enjoying Khemia but I really don't mind waiting a while to see where it goes, and Cities just sounds like reading it will be a really nice time.

I've loved what I've read of Khemia so far and found myself heavily identifying with Scipio, but if you need to take a break from it I'm happy with that too. You doing what is right for you and your mental health is way, way more important! Besides, I'll be here regardless of what comes, just like I'll be here for Khemia when it comes back. c:

Is there any update on Echo build 53?

Cryptid

Please take care of yourself. Especially now. I know we are al biting at the heels for Adastra content but your health always comes first.

Gael

I think this is a great way to restructure and take care of yourself. Please ensure you're getting proper rest in all of this. Thank you for all the wonderful work on all of these novels.

Worraps

It's best to focus on a core and not branch out into diverging new stuff. IMHO. Consider how Echo, the Smoke Room and Adastra are going to fit together into a coherent narrative. The dark focus in the Echo mine is plainly a bit of what the Parents fear: the Darkness. Earth's peoples are mostly immune to its effects, and uniquely large numbers of species live in relative peace with each other. Third, Earth is capabel of collectively forgetting previosu conatct with eh galactics,.All of that makes them a prime focus for the Parents, which woudl have manipulated Amicus to make contact. His "human" could well have been Chase, invited to Rome to speak at a parapsychology conference after his famous broadcast. Now equipped with a Parent-generated implant, Chase retursn to Earth, and indeed, to Echo. Dot, as they say, dot dot.

OMG is there anything that he doesn't look super cute doing. Best husband ever and best boy ever.

i think everyone will be thrilled about another adastra related story (especially that there is amicus joining in too) i for one am defiantly excited about this and hope that there will be much more to unvail about the previous VN adastra (i for one is hoping to find out what the human is doing back on earth. so maybe more info and story about them both but thats me personally hoping)

For what it's worth, I've greatly enjoyed Scippio and Neferu as characters so far- I think they've got a lot of potential, good luck in figuring out how to tell their story. Looking forward to the new project!

Dannycario

I'm sorry to see the project put on hiatus, I thought Khemia was exploring some interesting ideas and asking some interesting questions but I trust your gut on what you want! Regardless of what you make I'll always be excited to follow along. I hope Cities has a lot of the excitement and drama you have a knack for!

As per my previous comments, I'm glad you're pacing yourself based on your health needs. Similarly, I understand that there are some times where pausing and revisiting material is absolutely the best way to go; and I agree that the new subject matter sounds very fertile for exploring more about both beloved and despised characters, as well as a phenomenal world-building exercise. However, there was considerable whiplash with the announcements: the team set its own date for publishing its own content. On the delivery date, we're told that the planned content would be suspended indefinitely, and would instead be replaced by a substitute several weeks later. Any kind of "heads up" beforehand would have helped significantly to reset expectations.

I played adastra again (and again); each time, i feel relieved and happy 🤧😊 (sometimes sad but definitely happy). The story is interesting and the attachment for the characters (Amicus, (for sure lol), mc, Neferu etc.) is there. For Khemia I start to read the synopsis and i want to try it. Understand who is Scipio but also more about Neferu. Surely I would be happy to see how the previous mc will be integrated again in the serie but i can stick with the following adventure between Skip and Neferu. But what is important, it is your health ! Take your time, have a rest. If "City" is important for you in order to seek more ideas, distancing yourself, etc... do it but just take care of yourself. Health is more important than anything else 🙂. I think we can all wait

Leonard

Take care of yourself! we will always be there supporting you! Thanks for your amazing story

Baroncito

We love you all!!! ❤️❤️❤️
