And here is the chapter 89 of The odds were never in my favour, which will be published next month.

As is always the case, it's unbetaed.

I think there's one more chapter after this one before we move on to the Second Task itself.

Enjoy!

This is a pleasant surprise! I thought because of the update that we wouldn’t be getting a new odds chapter till January but I was wrong! Now, if I have guessed your convention correctly then the next chapter will be the 2nd task (I haven’t read it yet)

Awesome chapter as always quick question, does Lilly's time stuck in the protraits of ruin count as time since death for the purposes of vampire resurrection (aka how much humanity does she have left)

Another great chapter graced our eyes with its shiny newness. And because I didn't say anything to I believe the chapter before, I'll just add it here in this comment. Alexandra's animal gift is really good more or less subtle criticism of her talks with the light Champions. It really is along the lines of: "You want to help the light? Sure, we'll help. That said, oh great champion, here is our hint as to what we think will happen if you don't abbondon your ill thought course of action." Hell we can see the reasoning too in the actions of a certain faction. How did they go with getting their clues and what do they want Alexandra for? We had the approach of using human bait to distract the beast and then grab the clue or of casting conviently invisible magic and waiting until everyone else had a date with the medics and then pulling out a steak for beast distraction and pacification. And what do they want Alexandra for? Nothing else but the heavy lifting, in this case they want her to be their defense against Lyudmilla and then for the fighting against the Exchequer and if that is done they'll most likely have to throw her to the light wolves. And let us not forget at this moment the Exchequer are doing a fair amount of work, so that Alexandra actually prospers. Just look at the first task and compare it to the swimmingpool of secrets incident. Huge amount of water? Check. Very deadly and very big snake? Check. some other fighting to do meanwhile? Check. Let's add that at least Lady Morgane clearly knows of Alexandras animagus form from her visit in egypt and one should be able to see how this task was taylored towards Alexandras benefit. And then we have the aftermath, with gifts over gifts and a renewed offer of apprenticeship. Even in this chapter it appears with her mother teaching her a specific and oddly fitting potion, considering the task ahead. Now I come to the part where I use my crystal ball to predict the future. The format for the next task will be the same as with the first one, one champion per shool will descend into the arena to do the task at the same time. Alexandra, Malatesti and Lucrezia will only have to go against the regular champions, while Henry, Eleonora and the Gryffindor Champion have the easy task of dieing against Lyudmilla. Surely Lyudmilla will be able to do something about these pesky Light Champs before they corrupt Alexandra.

Been waiting eagerly for this one. One step closer to the Second Task (and oh boy, that task is going to clobber Hogwarts. This is why you don't ignore the course recommendations Dumbledore)

Nah, I promise a chapter per month, I'm a man of my word...admitedly, I must admit most of the chapter was written before 10-5. It's doubtful it would have been completed so early otherwise.

Antony444

It has somehow slowed down the process in several ways, but altered it in many others. Something else to remember is that Dumbledore is heavily prejudiced against vampires, and the Light's information on vampires is not...always exactly accurate, shall we say?

Antony444

True, Alexandra can provide an illusion of strength, but she's not infallible. And one of four Champions is not exactly a triumph either...To be fair to Dumbledore, Runes are in the curriculum as an elective, and he insisted a few times all the subjects involved in the preliminaries would be involved in the Tournament as a whole. Granted, he should have tried to organise one Runic-dominant or Rune-only preliminary, but it's far from cheap. Anyway, he can't control or force other Champions to study Runes if they don't want to.

Antony444

Your predictions are not exactly correct, no. And yes, I'm evil fro just limiting my answer to that.

This is a really interesting chapter, with the various characters actually attending classes. Alex not being the greatest at Pottery was interesting but at least she did something she was interested in and not just endlessly train and prepare. Dumbledore getting a nasty shock when he realises that he has missed a couple of times Alex has apparated back to Hogwarts is a amusing, and nice to see Severus with a bit of the self-awareness we got to see earlier in the story. Hopefully, we get more of him. I'm really looking forward to the particulars of the second task and what this tournament is going to look like. I do think that Alex and Hermione were right in that the organisers went out of their way to frustrate the champions, though I suppose that's the point. We finally get to see Krum in person, and he seems nice, but how much of that continues is the question. Also, we see Ra and company trying to find out what Osiris's plan was, which as said can't be just to kill a few people, looking forward to seeing how that proceeds.

It somehow feels like every task will kill two 'champions'... a Slytherin, and in this case, probably whoever has to face Chaos. It would be good for laughs if that's consistent.

Antony444

Only two (grin)? I seem to remember three died during the First Task, you know...
