As I've finished writing most of ch86 (which has a good chance to be the biggest chapter ever written for this timeline) here is chapter 84, Goodbye Hogwarts, which sees the heroes (unless it is the villains?) leave Scotland for Venice and the oncoming European Magical Tournament.

The Champions are summoned, and this is definitely the calm before the storm...

Two chapters from the same story. Nice. Keep the good work.

Sorry. Chapter 83 was the corrected chapter. My mistake

Your story is cursed. Every single time I read one chapter of it I ravenously desire to read the next, to no avail. I feel like Tantalus, except I'll eventually get a brief respite when you deem us worthy of the next chapter a month later. :) ALSO! Do you have any plans to introduce Andros the Invincible into the lore of your story in any way? He is a canonical greek wizard from classical antiquity who had a giant-sized patronus and was a powerful wandless caster.

IAmTheGuardsman

I’m getting very nervous about what the exchequer’s plan is. I’m very sure in involves Alexandra in some critical way (or at least a champion of the Morrigan) Also it’s good to see that Neville at least tries to not be terrible to Alex (I am hoping that Draco might get some character development to make him into NOT a snivelling little coward but oh well)

Mordred

Good chapter one minor bit which confused me was the bit about galleons Vs dreadnoughts which said a galleon with enchantments would especially stand less chance than one without which didn't particularly make sense to me. (Also minor typo it say's beast of health rather than best of health)

Really the calm before the storm, this feeling permeates this chapter, I can't wait to read the hints of the Exchequer's plan that will be the surprises of the ceremonies.

Nicholas

Thanks! I agree this is the calm before the storm. I'm also surprised Dumbledore and Ra had the good sense not to attack Alexandra on the train. That is out of character for them.

Love this story and can’t wait for more, also I can’t help but feel that Chekhov’s Hydra is being paraded around in this chapter lol, all this water I don’t doubt a certain hydras gonna get unleashed during a water task gone wrong for our dear Dark Lady in training. Keep up the great work

Ra has already floated the idea in previous chapters to eliminate her, but Dumbledore who actually cares about his country in some fashion understands it is political suicide. One thing I have enjoyed about the recent chapters is making it clear just how much more of a fanatic Ra is in comparison to other light wizards. Makes some of the more crazy actions more effective in context.

Antony444

Cursed? Are you sure it isn't blessed? (grin) No, no Andros the Invincible. The Exchequer uses Ecclesials, not Patroni.

Antony444

Don't fear, it (or part of it at least) will be explained next chapter. As the Light will discover to its sorrow, knowing is not exactly helping them...

Antony444

Ironically enough, all this waster is a Chekhov's gun, but maybe not the one you think about...(grin)

Antony444

You're right to be concerned (evil grin). As for Draco, no promises for now...

I really enjoyed this chapter. Once again, the other champions of Hogwarts fail to impress, this time with their failure to research and needing to try and extract information from one of the few competent people in the train. The Ravenclaw's were right to ward their dining experience to keep of spying. I wonder why Angelina was eating away from the Gryffindors, though from what we have heard previously she's not a fan of Leo and Ron managing to escape their suspension because Dumbledore pulled strings. The trou of the school was handled well, and poor Susan seeing somebody flirting with her girlfriend. I do think that that part where Alex walks out on Dumbledore and Ra needs to be a bit expanded. You mentioned one line about their 'tirade' but didn't actually show it so it felt a bit bizarre. Once again we see that the Black Queen is bad news, with even Osiris being a bit wary that she would discover what the Exchecker's plan was, and Henry being rather scared of her. However, Henry and Elenore seem to the be most sensible of the Light Champions. I'm looking forward to the opening ceremonies and more information going forward. Also, a scene with the Hogwarts champion getting a up front view of how powerful/ruthless the Dark Queen is would be kind of needed. As you pointed out in the previous chapter (81 I think), its perfectly legal for her to curse her classmates, and seeing the sheer power she has would be kind of a wakeup call. Neville is still trying to be neutral to Alex, but Ron doesn't want him being social like that, which is a bit of a shame. With Sirius dead, the entire plot about the life debt is unlikely to surface but I'm still waiting for that plotpoint to surface, with who ACTUALLY betrayed the Longbottoms, and the repercussions if it came out publically enough. And Dumbledore is kind of jumping the gun here a bit with planning to expel Alex, doesn't he remember she has the Black Files? Or has he forgotten that little point? Though with the way Alex is improving, he might not need worry about POLITICAL danger when Alex might be able to duel him by the start of her fifth year(assuming he survives whatever the Exchecker are doing).

Antony444

Yep, Alexandra may have the political ability to destroy him, but the Hydra would prefer to humiliate him where his fame went from, which was from his magical prowess...

Lets start with the usual, it is, like the last chapter with the massive draconic Troll, a good chapter in the way, that it sets the tone for the next Samhain chapter. And because I didn't say anything to the chapter before I have to rectify that. My personal read of the situation is, that Nidhogg is, in some ways just like Osiris, a gigantic Troll. He is bored out of his mind, and wants to be free again. And so when people manage to talk to him, he goes out of his way, to get even a little bit of amusement. And I am rather sure, he will be broken out, even if the aftermath of it forces a certain someone to take one for the team. On Another note, Lady Morganes plans seem to slowly but certainly come to fruition. With just one tiny little act she managed to save the life of her successor, baited the Light Champions and put a Hydra sized distraction on the field. Not that most people would credit her with the first of those three things, but would Alexandra have taken the risk of having to go up against Durmstrangs Dark Queen without being pressured into it? Being in the Limelight acts as a security blanket for Alexandra. Too bad for Alexandra, that at after freeing Nidhogg she will have to disappear for a while, but we all know who will gleefully exploit that. "Gotta catch 'em all." - muttered by Osiris when he learns that the Person that his Agent in Hogwarts wants to recruit has a certain eye color And now, just because I can, a short version of what I think amounts to the timeline of the underlying conflict. Included is a good amount of guesswork, so I take absolutely no responsibility if something is wrong. - around 3000 BC Ra and Osiris are born into this world and begin to do stuff. Osiris gets to be King, while his even more arrogant brother becomes part of the clergy. In a series of events Ra binds himself to all of the light Powers and by a poor choice to Fate. Then he begins his efforts to rid the world of Darkness. Fate and the backstabbed Osiris are understandably pissed and begin their revenge campaigns independently of each other. Fate decides Ragnarok is needed and throws it in everybodies face. -Time passes and stuff happens that we yet don't know about. Fate's efforts to get rid of Ra are as of yet unsuccessful - around 323 BC, Alexander the Great has a bout of Megalomania and reaches out to Osiris and the Dark. His former Master decides genocide is the way to go and Fate decides that it has enough on Ra to warrant a second Prophecy in regards to him. The Prophecy of Camlann is uttered for the first time, shortly before a certain Dragon decides to take a few survivors to the, back then, end of civilisation. In the transported cargo is a small green eyed baby girl. - Another time that we don't truly know about. Stuff happens and a certain dragon gets comfortable on the british isles, where after a short while a small empire begins to exist, its leader is someone with a very peculiar eye color. - less than ten years before the Battle of Camlann, the part of the magical era, which is Light comes to an end, Ragnarok is still coming and Ra's personal prophecy too and so Ra tries to break the world again to cater to his whims. It goes over well and relatively easily due to Fate taking one for the Team. The Chaining of Fate and the creation of Excalibur from a piece of Fate marks to this day the day where Ra and the Light lose, even if they don't know it yet. Through Excalibur Fate begins to drain the Power of the Light. Fate's last Words before it was chained were "Checkmate, Asshole!" or something very similar. - Excalibur gets pulled out of the Stone by Arthur, Excrement begins to hit the rotating Impeller hard enough so that everyone but Mordred get to be part of the fun. Lady Morgane begins to have slight Anger management Issues after being betrayed by her former Mentor and replaced as the Queen by a brainwashed idiot. - still a few months away from the Battle of camlann, Mordred gets crowned in a counter to Arthur. Mordred, an Action girl if there ever was one, still feeling left out, decides to get the most powerful Merc available to protect her, so that her Advisors don't moan about a lack of protection when she takes to the field. She and the Merc in question become fast friends over their mutual dislike of Ra, Myrddin and Arthur ... that Mordred pays well and the Merc indirectly sticks it to Lady Morgane might have hepled too. - The Battle of Camlann happens and a good bunch of people die or flee, with fleeing being the unwise option of the day. Osiris decides to pillage, then burn Camelot. - Lady Morgane is resurrected and decides to punish deserters and the Light sided Traitors if she can get away with it. It takes centuries but the list of people that she gets back at is impressive and includes all the deserters (they are either turned into Dementors directly or in case of Rowena Ravenclaw punished by ending their Offspring in a way that does not imply her (Helena ran away and Salazar Slytherins prized apprentice gets sent after her, Morgane interdicts the bloody Baron, places a Compulsion on him and watches him kill her and then in a moment of shock kill himself. Rowena dies shortly thereafter and Salazar leaves Hogwarts in an effort to find who mind-whammied his apprentice. He finds the culprit and becomes a blood Donor) - another period, where stuff happens without us knowing truly anything about it. - in the 1970s an Agent of the Exchequer begins teaching a girl with a specific green eye coloration. The agent approaches the King who is about to deny that request until he hears of that girls eye color and temperament. After that it is just a formality to bring her into the exchequer family ... and that should just about be it ....

IAmTheGuardsman

So I am getting some slight skitter vibes from Alexandra. Did Skitter inspire you to write this interpretation of Harry?

IAmTheGuardsman

Another thing. I just started rereading the whole Odds and I have a question for you Antony: in the first scene on the Hogwarts express, how different would things be if Ron was the first into Alex’s compartment how different would things be? Would they have made friends or would Ron walk out or would something entirely different happen?

Bel

This is a bit of a general question of the story rather than the latest chapter. I've recently been re-reading 'The Odds were never in my favour, and in chapter 44, when Grindewald meets the King of the Exchequer, there is a bit of a show of the destroying of Voldemort's Horucrux's. Specifically, the Diary, the Ring and finally the Amulet are all destroyed. If it isn't a spoiler for something huge, how does this play out with the three artifacts of Death? Wek now that Alex has the Invisibility cloak, at the moment Dumbledore still has the Eldar wand...but the resurrection stone was part of the ring. Did it get removed or destroyed by the liquid?

Antony444

The Horcrux is destroyed, but the power of the Stone upon the ring remains, it wasn't destroyed. Alexandra has the Cloak, Dumbledore has the Wand. They may or may not have their importance later in the story...

IAmTheGuardsman

So I found this video online and I thought that it might give you some ideas for a light vs dark conflict for the Pope vs the kings of Europe (keep in mind the HRE actually worked before this) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kH7TVAntJC4&t=870s

Maybe I’ve watched too much Fate/Stay Night, but I’m starting to see shades of the Holy Grail War in this tournament. It has 7 tasks over 7 months and has attracted all 13 Champions of the Powers. It doesn’t need major ley lines because it is its own self-contained ritual. Since this is supposed to begin “The Death Of The Light”, the target is probably the chaining of Fate, but I could be wrong. Ra and Dumbledore are focused on the political consequences and damaging their enemies, but if they knew the real stakes, even Niddhogg might take a back seat. Also, I take it is not coincidence that all the Champions are of an age range to take part in this. That seems highly unlikely unless the Powers have agreed to do battle here, in the sense that two armies must agree to a particular battlefield. I doubt the Light wants to fight here, but they have been outmaneuvered and duped into a very unfavorable position.

Antony444

Amusing, because I did not watch Fate/Stay Night or read it any manga form, etc...
