Here is the Chapter 81 of The odds were never in my favour, Aborted War.

Fair warning: the violence really doesn't last long, but it's...extremely violent.

After that politics...and soon, all students will return to Hogwarts. Not for long, but still.

Enjoy!

Well I just read your comment a few seconds ago soooo

Bel

Oh, this is a fun chapter. I do think the jump from the end of Chapter 80 with Fred and George trying to summon her to the Quiddich Grounds to the start of this chapter seems to be missing a scene or some clarification about something went down, but that might just be writing style. Fudge is in trouble and everybody knows it. With how much an international pariah the UK seems to be in the Odds universe, I don't think people in the international community are going to be happy with Fudge trying to skip out on the payments for the traumatised people. And yet more conformation that Alex is now on a 'Lady of Magic' level power. We already had confirmation of that before, but its nice to get confirmation. If I remember the document posted about the time of the Azakaban Escape, Bellatrix is one level higher than the most basic Beta, and Dumbledore is near the top of the second-highest level in Beta, but its nice to see in terms of pure magical power where our protagonist stands. That said, the various Ministry Department Heads not thinking that Alexandria is somebody magically powerful is...sadly amusing. Shows how far competence has fallen. I wonder if Draco is going to get any punishment from his parents since he was begging for his life while his parents were being brutalised.

Alexandra is shockingly powerful when she cuts loose, and then we get her perspective which was "Man, it's going to be good when I stop sucking at this." Of course she's still quite a bit less scary than the other Very Scary Girl currently running around being a Wolf at things.

Bel

Well, Alexandra is three-four years younger and didn't get introduced to magic until she was 11, instead of having access to the Tzar's library. Still, you are right, but she's practising hard.

Now imagine such a carnage during the tournament tasks. Other Hogwarts champions will fall like flies. I feel sorry for them because they don't know what they signed up for.

So right now Alexandra's sitting in the mid-to-high Beta tier then?

Antony444

Depends the opponents they will meet in each task and the ciscumstances, obviously. But if anyone who is not Alexandra is against Lyudmila...well, the funerals won't be far.

Another good chapter. Alexandra interrupting lord Yaxley was great and I wonder what Artemis Cassius would do if she found out, that it was Alexandra that killed the wererats in rashtam and now killed the death eaters. Go to lily and complain? "Lilian, you know I like you very much, but if you could steer your daughter away from my affairs I would be very thankful." In an unrelated affair, Alexandra seems to intend to become such a household name so that she doesn't need any big titles. when she is famous enough she or her are perfectly enough to convey who is meant, as examples could show: "What is she doing now? ... By the Morrigan, why did I think it was a good idea to make her play bait?" - Lady Morgane during the first task or "OH God, it's her, run for your lives." - random Death Eater 10 seconds before his death.

If your measure of a good chapter is making me read it multiple times this is your best chapter in quite a while. Good Job! On my first read I agreed with Bel that there seemed to be a scene missing telling us how Alexandra knew to rescue Lyra but when I thought more about it I couldn't find where to put it that would improve the pace of the story so you did well to leave it out. In the end my desire is driven by curiosity to know how Alexandra got the information she needed but I'm sure the answer is magic and I don't actually need more answer then that. To those speculating on her power levels, I'm pretty sure Alexandra is above Beta Red at this point. Bellatrix is Beta Red and she said the spells Alexandra used take too much power for Bellatrix to use them. We know that in addition to those spells she apparated across England several times and took down the wards of Yaxley manor. So she had power to spare. This chapter produced two questions I am hoping Antony444 might be willing to answer. First, Cromwell was famously "executed" two years after he died. Historically at the insistence of Charles II whose father Cromwell had executed. Since this chapter told us Cromwell was a Dark Lord I suspect a magic ritual was involved. In this universe, what really led to Cromwell being exhumed from his grave so he could be executed? Second, was Scylla the youngest member of the Yaxley family when Alexandra slaughtered every Yaxley except Scylla and if she was would Alexandra have acted differently if there had been a Yaxley child? Thanks for all the hard work!

Antony444

1) People were so afraid of Cromwell's powers, and they were several rumours he had used phylacteries (like Rook Imposter) to attain a higher form of immortality. To be sure he had just not moved to another body, they needed to exhume him and do several verifications. Which proved all negative, Cromwell was really dead and gone. 2) Alexandra would have likely spared any child of House Yaxley, yes. This wouldn't have meant the child himself (or herself) would have gotten free and in control of the Yaxley fortune, however. Given how certain Houses seem to be breeding grounds for Death Eaters, measures would have been taken to avoid the same thing repeating in twenty years.

The fact that Dumbledore is just now, all these chapters and in universe years later, starting to suspect that maybe, just maybe, he's underestimated Alexandra, really shows how good he is at lying to himself and ignoring inconvenient truths. Thanks for the new chapter.

Antony444

Yep. Well that, and it's been a few hectic years for him. Grindelwald, the Exchequer, Fudge, etc...Dumbledore is only a single man, for all his ego which led him to ignore this.

When will you publish the next un-betaed chapter ?

Antony444

Next week, if things go according to plan. I'm writing on important scenes of The odds right now.
