As promised, I have a proper update for my lovely readers. These are the first 13000+ words of Extermination 8-1 The Port of Lost Souls. I am a bit more advanced than that in my writing of course (18000 words), but one might say this should be at least...let's say 35-40% of the final (unbetaed) chapter.

Fair warning: it begins in violence, and ends in violence. There is no peace in Commorragh, only an eternity of carnage, and the endless bark of the macro-cannons...

ah burning xeno on the first day of a new month no better way to start it on an other note do we have to start to wonder if the imperium has the medals in storage that they will need to give out after this

Anonymous

Jesus, man. You weren't kidding about carnage.

Anonymous

So your preview is a whole chapter in itself. Nice.

Boris Michenski

Ok, this goes so far beyond in destruction that I imagined, it's not even funny... 260 battleships as fast reaction force? Honestly, I greatly underestimated Druckhari fleet numbers. Still, now most of their fleets in Dark City are destroyed, but there is shit tone of others forces which will begun to converge there. Meanwhile Vect is still ploting... wonder if in the end he won't be the one to try to open Khain Gate, so to make city perish by his ambitions... And Pierre is as great as ever.

Confused

No better way to start your day then reading Dark Eldar being butchered by the tens of millions.

Trevayne

Yes, the Dark Eldar are getting slaughtered, in the trap they built for themselves. If thety had fought an open space engagement, the DE would have won, or there would be only a few Imperial/Necron ships left.

Trevayne

But they built their ships for fast attack, highly maneuverable and high speed, but reliant on shadow-fields and not getting hit instead of armor and the ability to ignore hits.

Trevayne

Here, they were mostly caught at anchor, and even those that got to move were in a relatively tight space. so, they get slaughtered.

Welcome to 2020 :D Filename was just first I've seen from text XD

I love it. Here have more money.

Antony444

Oh don't worry, the Imperium has very, very large reserves of medals for the rainy days. One might argue it's the only thing the Munitorum always find no matter how hard it is to bring to the war zones...

Antony444

I considered publishing a teaser and then the preview...but I thought it was too evil, even by my standards (grin)...

Antony444

Don't forget that the Port of Lost Souls was the Aeldari equivalent of the Ring of Iron for the Imperium, and Port Shard and Port Carmine would be Jupiter and Terra or vice-versa. So yes, the harbours were going to be heavily defended...but they never envisaged it was possible they could be sucker-punched like the Caribbean fleet has just done.

Antony444

The Dark Eldar ships would have won, yes (with crippling casualties, it has to be said). The numerical advantage was just too overwhelming for any outcome to be possible.

Antony444

Yeah. Though to be fair, even Imperial ships with their heavy armours are terribly vulnerable if you get them with their engines cold at high anchor and their void shields deactivated. Adamantium prows and reinforced hulls will make sure there won't be the Eldar candlesticks, but that just mean the enemy will need two volleys to kill them.

It was a BLAST. I feel both amusement, respect and good amount of envy for your productivity! :D

Wow, with this chapter (part) I definitely got my money's worth from my patreon subscription

Where did Nyx get the templates for the Volkite Charger and Blaster? The Caliver template was a gift from Mars in Muster 6.1, but this is the first mention of Nyx manufacturing the other two. Also, did you mean to write Blaster instead of Serpenta? As far as I can tell, the Volkite Blaster is Mechanicus-only.

Albino87

Vect did really hit the nail on its head of the fallout of destruction of the shipyards. But it looks like that will be the last of there problem as the Imperium is doing the spring cleaning of the galaxy's underbelly.

Dale

I'd say that is a tad premature, my friend. Granted from the looks of it the 1st chapter of this carnage is going very, VERY well. But remember that Weaver's "reasonable" chances before Necron alliance were 10%. And from what we've seen the DE are not unable to cripple Necron Battleships. Out of place DEs tend to die screaming, but now they are AWARE that someone out there has decided to come calling, and she's not in the least amused.

Dale

And to our esteemed author, I must say this update was VERY nice! I'm thrilled that the DEs have found a Name for Weaver, kind of like the Orks are calling her Swarmbringer. Makes me wonder what kind of Titles the various races and factions will append to her Name?

Anonymous

Ancient Pierre has got to be one of the best characters. He is hilarious and I hope he survives this to keep causing more headaches and laughs. The tricorn hat is absolutely great and makes such a wonderful mental image.

Antony444

Serpenta were the Volkite weapons in possession of the Alpha Legionnaires. Nyx doesn't have so much the templates for the Charger and Blaster (for the moment) but Dragon and Taylor obtained generous deliveries shipments from the Mechanicus. And they only need to equip the Astartes contingent with these weapons, so it isn't exactly a huge number.

Antony444

Thanks! Indeed, the Drukhari have found a title for Weaver...as for the other races, well, they will in time too (evil grin).

Well it wouldn’t be Taylor without severe moral dilemmas and costs, that’d weight heavily on her for the sake of the mission. Though, I do worry on how far her slowly growing cold determination is growing, you seem to be indicating that she slowly grows more merciless as the story progresses, is this in relation to a possible hint about Khepri?

Antony444

No, Taylor isn't getting the way of Khepri, she's 'just' getting the really ugly side of being in command of a particularly casualty-heavy operation. She felt it first at the Death Star, but here since she's the overall commander, the feelings are far, far worse...no matter how necessary and in her advantage the killing count is.

Anonymous

Thing is and we might forget it, the losses even on Weavers side is going to be enormous before it is done, Yes she went into a shooting gallery, but at the same time the reverse are true, it is very hard for the Durkhari to miss now they are beginning to get organized, in fact it is likely only the fact that the Racial fear against the Ymirs slaves AKA Necrons make them concentrated and inordinate amount of firepower in that direction that Weaver has not lost more than she already have, and her losses are beginning to be heavy even against ships like the Enterprise, and if some of the Imperial ships are not attempted boarded i would be surprised.

Anonymous

Also remember it is HUGE ships* that are batteling it out in a extremely confined space for their size (Only fighters have enough room to go all out in speed and manuvers) none of the ships involved are smaller than Starwars Star Destroyers in mass and for ships above Destroyers in lenght.

Antony444

True. But from a cold and rational point of view (which the Mechanicus excels at) even the destruction of all battleships and the Port of Lost Souls alone (without counting Port Carmine or Port Shard) would be enough to declare this expedition a triumph...and that was even if they lost the totality of the Caribbean forces. At some point, the awful and freezing reasoning behind the invasion is that no many how many humans die, they can be replaced (Taylor and other parahumans excepted). The Dark Eldar may recover from the infrastructure destruction...in a few hundred of thousands of years, and if the humans' rampage is stopped now.

Boris Michenski

By the way... if Taylor doesn't go the way of Khepri... "Something she had long denied...and something that sooner or later, she was going to have to face." - is it Emperour? The trait she did inherit once becoming a Saint?

Lord McDeath

I suspect that she will be leaving a few deathworld insects behind. To be devil the DE on the way out

Forgottenone

What I find odd is the fact that the cogboys didn't send probes out the active gates to find there locations in the galaxy. O wow looks like Chaos might get involved. I love the drama and everyone take on the fact they cannot save billions of slaves. Great work!

Kioras

Well we now know one of the names that Taylor has earned by her enemies. The Angel of Death. I also find it interesting that Malys refers to them ass humans, not the derogatory name normally used. One of thing did that Taylor will hate what she had to do for killing what in the end may be close to a large Hive Planet or two in Human populations, the sheer barbarity that the Dark Eldar has them live in makes it much worse. It will come as a sweet release for many instead. This has not even touched on the coming reinforcements that may show up through Pavia. Who knows how many might end up joining other then Cawl. Due to Warp issues we have no clue on how much reinforcements can be drawn from neighboring systems, sectors or even if they can get reinforcements from Nyx itself.

Antony444

Only a few? (Dark Eldar soldiers screaming in the distance as they're devoured by a tide of chitin)

Antony444

They will, but they must already make sure there's no more space opposition in the Port. Sending probes correctly across the Webway is something they have never done before, and if you're in the middle of a battle, the probes are going to be lost for sure. Plus while there might be allies on the other gate, it's also very possible there might be more Eldar horrors or unpleasant things. The Webway is a very dangerous place since the Fall for everyone.

Antony444

Yep ( evil grin). As for reinforcements, you have a clue in this chapter of the first forces able to answer. It will begin to pile up by 8-2 and 8-3, though there's the big problem to arrive in time to Pavia, Warp travel being what it is.

Dragoon9

Love the chapter. Came out Just as i finished rereading the story :) talking scale, how big is Taylor's fleet compared to other crusade fleets in the 40k univers?

Antony444

Depends. Certain fleets are three of four times this size, others are more on the Caribbean level. When it comes down to it, there's no 'standard' size for Crusade fleets...but they tend to have several Sectors to back their war effort. On the minus side, they have not in general a high level of commitment from the Adeptus Mechanicus...

I am a little confused, because we have seen harlequin appearances and interference throughout the story, whom seem to be aware of the influence and dangers Taylor possesses. But we also saw several full harlequin masques in the opening battle for Commoragh who would have been caught out and hit by the attacks from the Imperial fleet. Did they die and were unaware or uninformed by their other harlequin brethren? Did they have emergency exits ready to and were already prepared to evacuate? Or am I just misreading things?

Anonymous

At the start they had the sort of guidance that allowed them to make these decisions and they chose to assist Taylor to a degree (but without actually committing themselves to the fight), then Tzeentch puts up some sort of interference in the region as a move against the Emperor as it's aware of Taylor being a potentially valuable new piece for the Emperor to use. The Emperor counter-attacks by adding to the interference creating a shadowpoint, basically an area where future-sight type planning is shut down, the Emperor seems to have already had a plan beforehand but others that rely on looking into the future were blind at that point so the harlequins/Cegorach continued as they were and then found out what actually happened when the shadowpoint vanished which is just when Taylor is about to attack Commorragh. What this means for those that were at Commorragh at the time is that they were caught unprepared just like the Dark Eldar but the damage to them on the whole would be minor by comparison because the harlequins don't treat Commoragh like their capital.

Anonymous

I do hope the Black Templars get invited to the party. They'll probably erect a shrine to Taylor on their flagship just based on the amount of xenos killed in the invasion.

Antony444

There is going to be a call for arms in this chapter. Who will answer and in what strength will remain for a moment a surprise.

Anonymous

You probably won't answer this but ya know how aurelia malys was all "I was there when the Angel of Death tried to kill us all"? Calling taylor an Angel is a bit odd unless she finally gets her wings? That would be sweet
