It is important to let face-using beings know that they have your attention, usually by “facing” them – despite this term not really applying to what you’re doing.
You may not have many opportunities to express non-verbally that your focus is on them. It may be difficult and require conscious effort to give people the reassurances they are seeking.
You will need to ask directly about people’s well-being, since you are no longer able to ‘look’ inquisitive. Most will take the chance to be understanding about your difficulties if you explain them first.
You do not need to be ashamed to ask to speak with people alone so that they can understand you better, or vice versa.
Remember to express that you are happy for people’s good news verbally. You do not have a smile to manage it with, but if they are interacting with you, they do care what you are thinking and crave your encouragement.
Further, remember to express gratitude directly. Words may not come easily. Try using a nod, hand gesture, or gentle touch.
If you can find someone with an uncanny ability to understand you in the absence of visual cues, try not to fall in love with them right away. This is the one time when you should still play it cool.
