I'm not even much of a Lord of the Rings fan, and even I know the explanation for this.  It's an entire generation's "Why did the Death Star have such a vulnerable weak spot?" plot hole that isn't one.

Also, in my headcanon, Gandalf follows all fantasy heroes around complaining about fanboys.
