Yeeeaaah, I'm sure hardcore Idolmaster fans already knew about this, but I honestly didn't realize that the 2011 anime was actually the SECOND Idolmaster series.  Four years earlier, Sunrise made an entirely difference approach to the franchise: Idolmaster: Xenoglossia... which had virtually nothing to do with said franchise, it just looked like any other Gundam-meets-Evangelion mecha knock-off.  Admittedly, I didn't watch the whole thing (I'm not trudging through 24 episodes for the sake of a one-page comic) but I watched enough to tell how forgettable it was.

And seriously, WHY make a show like that?  I mean, I can maybe see doing an Alternate Universe OVA as a joke once the more faithful adaptation was over, but why START on a note like this?  I can't imagine anyone unfamiliar with the Idolmaster games wanting to seek them out based on this, and surely anyone who WAS familiar with it would feel let down by an Idolmaster show that has nothing to do with Idolmaster.  I just don't get who this show was for.

I'd be tempted to ask if that one mecha-movie trailer they showed in the later series was a reference to this one, but THAT movie looked a lot more interesting than this.
