Oh, Japan, you and your wacky xenophobic racism.

I mean, dude on the boat here isn't even the worst case of "ways you really shouldn't be drawing black people" in the first episode, Yuu's trip through New York has several even more cringe-worthy examples.  It's just that he's literally one of the first things we see in the show, right after the intro wraps up.  It's a worrisome first impression, wondering if I'm gonna have to tiptoe around THIS for 26 episodes.  But thank the merciful Lord, the show eventually makes it out of America, introduces Aroi and Sarah, and proves that the artists DO, in fact, know how to draw dark-skinned characters who don't bring to mind an Al Jolson routine.  Apparently, it just has to be dark-skinned POLYNESIAN people, not dark-skinned AMERICAN people.

I say again, you and your wacky xenophobic racism.

(I swear, they won't all be as uncomfortable as this.  Still, if the first page made you afraid I'd be spending this whole series unconditionally gushing about the show, I guess now you know better?)
