This is all so tacky, oh my god. I cannibalized the bottom layer of the skirt (a synthetic satin, probably polyester) from that crazy 80s wedding dress, and then added two layers of iridescent chiffon. (The hem is 220" around! That's 6 yards of fabric.) I also took that ruffle straight off the wedding dress; it's just pinned into place right now. All the skirt fabric needs to be ironed to get rid of those fold lines. For the bodice, I used Simplicity 1215, my go-to pattern for a strapless bodice because it happens to fit me perfectly with no modifications. The wedding dress had a 3" train, so I used some of that fabric for the bodice and lining, and covered it in a layer of the same iridescent chiffon used for the skirt. Next up, I need to create those monster sleeves, and then sew it all together, add a zipper, etc. Then the structure of the dress will be done and I can start on embellishment and accessories.

This looks great. I am hugely impressed by how you found a dress that, by many people's standards, would have served almost "as is" but are instead stripping the whole thing back to get it juuust right. :) Marvellous!

Thank you so much! I really thought I'd be using more of the original dress, but once I had it on the dress form and was looking at reference images, it became clear to me that it needed a lot of work. I'm still going to take a few creative liberties with my version, but I love the original dress so much, I want to get as close to it as possible!
