Damo it's probably because you're British, but Racism and Racial Ignorance here in this country is very different from others...Obviously times have changed and in the 2020s it's not very so overt (for the most part), but this was the early 90s and back in those days White Americans who were fans of Sports but also racist were very passionate about seeing their teams win, but also wanted to see them win "the right way" (or should I say the "White" way). You'll even see it now in politics today- American Conservatives were celebrating the USWNT getting knocked out of the World Cup because of how most of the team is considered "Woke", never mind that the U.S didn't win the World Cup....So make no mistake about it- those racists who sent in all those hate messages, they were celebrating the losses to Duke

Thanks for the comment JT, I wouldn’t say being British is always a good reason, I’m British (Nick) and I’ve always had a thing for American culture and history, mainly stemmed from my love of American hip hop from the early 90s onwards. I’m also going for American citizenship as you know 😂 I also could see myself retiring to the states in later life. I’m digressing massively from the point but yeah im more aware of the history of the US than most people I know, but still have a lot to learn. That’s crazy about the USWNT, I didn’t know that! I also hate the word woke 😂 it’s used by conservatives in both our countries 😂

Should be noted that college sports fandom is crazy intense. I have no doubt in my mind at least half, if not the majority of those racist letters were from Michigan's rivals fanbases just posing as UM fans/alumni.
