Jean was a pruner from Favarolle and was dirt poor, helping to care for his sister's 8 children after the father died. One night he was overcome with starvation and stole a loaf of bread that he never even managed to finish stuffing into his mouth. He was sentenced to 5 years. the other 14 years were from 3 escape attempts. I don't think that the show demonstrates a really accurate understanding of Javert's (the policeman) psychology but if you pay attention you will see some very interesting things regarding how he sees the world. Plus the actor did a phenomenal job. The next episode is probably the hardest to get through, its pretty dark. Just fair warning. But Jean Valjean will be our main character from this point onward, because yes I also find his story to be the most interesting out of the other prologue stories
