Actually, since the world of AoT is an upside down version of planet Earth, the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. That's why Falco said they were heading north and pointed to the sunset on his right (to the east). I love that Mappa got it right.

I'm assuming Marley is just an alternate reality version of Germaniac/Britainic empires trying to colonize the world after the fall of Rome. But instead of going hard on the Americas and Australasia, they instead put most or all of their resources into what would be South Africa and beyond. The concept of Paradis being a prison colony for a specific race/caste is actually an echo of Germany's plans in the late 1800's and early to mid 1900's to turn Madagascar into a penal colony for "undesirables" (such as the Jewish peoples) while European powers took over the African mainland
