We are watching the series on Wakanim (same as Funimation or Crunchyroll)

It's a race against time, and Levi squad needs to get to the chapel before anything happens to Eren. All the while we get a bunch of new information about the past, the Reiss family, Titan powers, and so on, but there's still a bunch of question marks with all of this! And when Kenny then chooses to intervein, Historia makes a decision...

Thank God, you are the first reactors I've seen who were able to understand the Ackerman family tree immediately. So many people I've watched act like Levi and Mikasa are siblings and that her mom was an Ackerman...and just on and on. Thank you for paying attention and figuring that out so well!

On the point about Frieda reinforcing gender roles, I would try not to get so bent out of shape over it, although I would understand your frustration at seeing that in any modern context, certainly. Their society is almost medieval/steampunk and Historia and Frieda are both from the royal family, so Frieda is trying to teach her how to fulfill the expected role she would have in such a society, even though at that point she knew Historia would never really be considered a royal because of her split bloodline. There's very much an emphasis in Historia's character arc of "playing a role" which was also part of her relationship with Ymir. Frieda is an interesting case to me since she's an example of a genuinely good person who yet thinks that forcing a role on someone is going to help them. In my mind it makes her a more interesting character rather than someone to just hate. She clearly cares for Historia, but part of what she's doing is trying to get Historia to act in ways that their society would approve of, and while you could make an argument that she's just trying to "civilize" her, as all children need to be to some extent (like wiping boogers from your nose), she also goes too far in assuming Historia needs to also be "ladylike." It's what Frieda was taught herself, so she thinks it's part of what makes someone a good person, i.e. fulfilling your gender role. But clearly, Ymir doesn't fit the traditional feminine stereotype and yet Historia felt a deep and resounding connection with her all the same. Maybe Historia is just a more typically feminine kind of girl and what Frieda told her ended up helping her in the long run, but that would just be pure chance. I think you can criticize Frieda's actions there from a modern perspective where our society is very accepting of non-traditional gender expression, but you have to also understand where she's coming from. In Frieda's eyes, she knows society will expect girls to be ladylike, so teaching Historia how to be a "proper lady" is helping her. It doesn't mean she's objectively correct, but I don't think she's flatout wrong or even malicious either. Just more subtle writing I think.

Another great episode. Can't wait to see your reaction next week, one of my favorite episodes is next.

I mean I think any story set in a past setting will obviously have characters conform to gender/religious/cultural norms - just what it is

I get your point, but we never said it didn't make sense in relation to the characters or the story. And we are of course looking at it from a modern perspective, because we now know that forcing those stereotypical gender roles on anyone is pretty damn horrible. So it wasn't a criticism of the series, just our thoughts about that stuff in general :)

Okay I see, I must have misjudged your comments then. Thank you for the clarification.
