We are watching the series on Wakanim (same as Funimation or Crunchyroll)

There was A LOT of talking in this one, and even though it seemed like we got some answers here and there, it managed to leave us even more confused than before...

Eren: "To do that, I'll need to suppress all my emotions!" Me: "welp we're screwed"

even tho its mostly a full talk episode ,this is one of my fave of this season , the foreshadowing is amazing and i could recomend to rewatch it but idk if thats a good idea but the writing its so good

Unfortunately subtitles never manage to get it properly across, but Eren didn't ask "Whats up with the monkey?", but actually asked "What's a monkey?". In the Manga Ymir uses the word "Monkey" in normal japanese, while Eren repeats it in katakana. As in he's just copying the sound of the word, not the actual meaning.

Not related to the episode. My country just blocked patreon, and all premium vpns that I tried are blocked and don’t work. Writing this comment through the Tor browser and it was a massive pain. Are there any future plans for a YouTube membership if I want to support you guys?

Angry Eren...best Eren :D. It's like police going deep cover inside a criminal organization and get too deep to their role. Reiner pretty much has split personality or similar mental issues.

Not the first time I’ve heard of this, or at least heard of country’s where Patreon has been blocked. We don’t have any plans for YouTube memberships right now, but it’s definitely something we want to look into. Thanks for letting us know.

As I argued... I don't think it's DID, but more related to psychosis. Usually with DID you're split into 2 or more vastly different identities, and not different versions of yourself 😊

Anonymous

According to Wikipedia it's called Dissociative identity disorder (DID) eitherway and what you are refering to seems to have been previously known as multiple personality disorder (MPD)

Anonymous

I didn't catch it correctly if you understood it as intended then

Sonny Mike Olsen

DID was literally called MPD before it was called DID. I don't know what your point is. It's the same thing, so my argument still holds. I do NOT think it's DID, but more related to psychosis. It's not the first time a serious mental illness has either been 1) misrepresented and/or 2) stigmatised in this series

My point is, since it was apparently called MPD and is now refered to as the more general term DID, it's most likely that. Regardless of it being multiple identities with like different names, or if different personality states of yourself with opposite ways of acting & thinking. From what I understand, that's just nowadays the general term used for personality issues like Reiner appears to have. I decided to take a look into the AoT Wiki and here is a non spoiler quote "Reiner's psychological issues resemble those of dissociative identity disorder, in which a person's identity is fragmented into two or more distinct personality states, producing behavior changes and lapses in memory. This condition is often associated with post traumatic stress disorder." Overall to me DID seems to be a way more complex issue than just "you're split into 2 or more different identities rather than different versions of yourself". I don't really understand why you think it could be a psychosis, while unlike you I don't have any scientific background and don't have any experience in such a field, psychosis seems to be more about hallucinating and imagining things, which Reiner doesn't do. There is certainly the thing about "not knowing what's real and what's not real" but as far as I understand it, that refers to symptoms like hearing voices and delusions. Going comletely by Wikipedia here, but he doesn't have any actual symptoms of a psychosis. He doesn't hear any voices, he doesn't have any delusion (if he had, Bertholdt wouldn't have managed to snap him out of the soldier personality by saying that Reiner is a warrior), and there is no disorganization of speech/thought either, as there is no word salad, incomprehensible speech, etc. I respect you and your opinion as well as your educational background, which is definitely more than I have in this regard, but I do have to honestly disagree with you here. And I understand this may sound slightly like a spoiler, but you haven't seen enough about Reiner yet to fully understand what caused this mentality.

Sonny Mike Olsen

First off: psychosis =/= hallucination. I get your point, it *is* a complex case, and more complex than just this and that. Especially since we don't know the full story of Reiner. What puzzles me is that he is constantly shifting between states. Also. I can't find anywhere that says PTSD and DID are co-morbid. Yes, trauma creates DID, but trauma is not equal to PTSD. They are differential diagnosis of each other. I admit I don't know everything. Both professionally and about this series. And psychosis might not be right, but I'm also very uncertain that DID is the right diagnosis too. A lot of these things can't really be googled to be fully understood. People can't just diagnose people from 1 or 2 character traits, and that's what I mean when I say it's not the first time in this series that mental disorders are stigmatised. At this point for me, Reiner seems to be another one of those "misrepresented mental disorders" as I mentioned. But let's see if they can give us more.

But the first paragraph of "psychosis" on Wikipedia already tells us this: "Psychosis is an abnormal condition of the mind that results in difficulties determining what is real and what is not real. Symptoms may include delusions and hallucinations, among other features. Additional symptoms are incoherent speech and behavior that is inappropriate for a given situation. There may also be sleep problems, social withdrawal, lack of motivation, and difficulties carrying out daily activities." It names hallucinations as a possible symptom. And all the other symptoms don't fit Reiner at all either. Kat the majority of the fandom agrees that it's DID. There is even articles about it and YT videos of psychologists going deeper into this topic, but it's full of major spoilers for the series later on, after you finished the show please look it up.

Sonny Mike Olsen

... and a lot of these symptoms of psychosis still fit Reiners behaviour in this episode. I trust psychologists, so if they say DID, then okay. It might be that. But I don't for a second trust "majority of fandom", and you can't just wikipedia a few symptoms or disorders and think you know everything 🙃 (edit: I don't mean you as in specifically you, but it's the general you as in people, if you know what I mean? 😅) + read previous reply for more argumentation

If reiner character isn't fully developed at this point of the series whats the reason to tell kat to ¨look for it ¨or that the majority of the fandom agrees with such statement , just let kat&sonny figure out and make their opions later when they actually have a new perspective of the characters
